Anyone? Let Us Pray.

Every day I read many different so-called conservative websites to keep up with all the world and national developments.  Here and there are suggestions of what to do to change the direction and make something better.  None sound likely to work.

But today it occurred to me that we should do something radical:  join together and pray.  If all believers joined our prayers and trusted G-d, something wonderful might happen.  And I don’t mean to pray for this or that political candidate or for specific policies to be enacted or anything like that.  What I mean is that we all just pray for the welfare of this country trusting that G-d’s will still governs all things for His glory.

Consider these references:

*In the traditional Anglican tradition, today (4th Sunday of Easter and Sunday before Ascension) is Rogation Sunday (from the Latin “rogare” meaning to pray or ask for).  Monday – Wednesday are Rogation days.  What a perfect season to pledge together that all G-d fearers will pray regularly everyday that G-d’s will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

*The prayer of St. John Chrysostom assumes a promise that when two or three (even just 2-3) are gathered in Christ’s name, He will grant their request. Imagine if people all over the country committed to join their prayers every day for things to change for the better.

*Consider Psalm 33:15-19.  There is no king that can be saved by the multitude of an host, neither is any mighty man delivered by much strength.  A horse is counted but a vain thing to save a man by his great strength.  Behold the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear Him, and upon them that put their trust in His mercy; to deliver their soul from death, and feed them in the time of dearth.  Our soul hath patiently tarried for the Lord for He is our help and our shield.

*Christians believe that although Christ defeated the devil and continues to defeat the devil, the devil hasn’t disappeared and still seeks our destruction.  We know that the devil is the father of lies, so is it possible that the source and originator of so much that’s wrong in the world and based on out-and-out lies is really the devil?

*consider these petitions from the Great Litany:

That it may please Thee to bring into the way of truth all such as have erred and are deceived:  we beseech Thee to hear us good Lord.

That it may please Thee to strengthen such as do stand; and to comfort and help the weak-hearted; and to raise up those who fall; and finally to beat down Satan under our feet; we beseech Thee to hear us good Lord.

I would love to see more leaders calling us to pray and trust in the Lord to save us and the US and the world.  That would be bloggers and foundations and church leaders and publications.  We don’t need donations or another organization.  If we have someone to get the word out, people are likely to respond with a commitment to pray.  No marching, no demonstrations.

    Amen!

Yesterday (May 13) we Catholics celebrated the Feast day of Our Lady of Fatima. Her message centered around the sacraments, prayer, and penance. That message is still needed.

I’m with you 100%. Thanks for the post.

I have been feeling a certain futility in trying to keep up with current events lately. As I was reading yesterday, Acts 1:7 struck a chord with me:

7 He said to them, “It isn’t for you to know times or seasons which the Father has set within his own authority.

I don’t need to know who is doing what in government, but to turn it over to the LORD and ask for His intervention as you have written. My own part is to witness to his goodness being empowered and directed by His Spirit.

Here is a link to the Great Litany for those who, like me, have not been part of a liturgical church. It is good reading for meditation and prayer.

Thank you for these .  I hope more of us participate and join our efforts to yours.  When I was a child, we had a wall plaque that said “Prayer Changes Things” and now we need to exercise this gift the Lord has given to us.

Thanks for the link.  My parish uses this on Rogation Sunday and it is powerful.  I recommend everyone read it.

I know that the Atlantic is quaking in fear over the power of prayer.

The Devil does tremble at the prayers of the saints.

Thanks for the post. My wife and I have been part of the 24/7 prayer movement since 2008, so I fully endorse your call to prayer.

Oh, and what Arahant said. Get on Divine Help.

About a year ago a member of my Carmelite group gave us all a booklet titled,  “Daily Prayers to Save America”, put out by the Mary Foundation. I’ve been using it and reciting the prayers in there most days (I can’t claim to have prayed them daily, but close!).

I am a daily prayer of the Auxilium Christianorum, but one of its requirements is that a daily rosary be said as well. But knowing the Carmelites’ reputation for aggressive prayer and spiritual warfare, it is probably redundant with other, mandatory disciplines in their order.

We pray the Liturgy of the Hours (a minimum of Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer). I am not “required” to pray a daily rosary (though encouraged!), but I pray one daily, as well as the Divine Mercy Chaplet, which is one of the prayers in the booklet.

All of your comments have encouraged me enormously.  Thank you.  The more of us that unite in prayer the better off we will all be in so many ways if nothing else strengthening our own personal relationship with the Lord.  He has promised that He will bless our trust in Him.  Also be mindful that we too are sinners and always need to ask forgiveness.  May the Lord bless us and lead us and protect us.
