The Indictment

America’s descent into third-world status continues apace.  Instead of waiting for any of the serious or semi-serious criminal investigations into Trump to bear fruit, New York district attorney Alvin Bragg has decided to indict Trump on charges that are obviously bunk.  No one is buying this novel legal theory, not even legal analysts on the left.

It’s obvious why Bragg is doing this.  A serious and credible criminal indictment against Trump might have ruined his chances at winning the 2024 nomination, and Democrats desperately need Trump to run.  By pursuing an obviously fraudulent prosecution, Bragg has tainted the more serious criminal inquiries.  Of course, he’s totally destroyed the legitimacy of American democracy among the few people who still believed in it, but I doubt he gave that any thought.

The entire political situation in the U.S. is absurd.  Our presidential politics pits a cowardly man too stupid and senile to do his job against a man whose bravery, while demonstrably leading to many good policy outcomes, is a facet of his mental instability.  Meanwhile, the dangerously short list of politicians with real courage is filled with people who either have no political skills, are young and inexperienced, or are just crazy.

I knew the 2020s would be hell way back in 2014, and I knew it would be this bad, but watching it happen is another matter.  I was really hoping things wouldn’t get this bad.

To win in 2024 the Dems need to run against Trump so Bragg has done this to ensure he gets the nomination. Will it work, probably but I can only hope not.

    I agree wholeheartedly.    A week ago I said…

The Libs think they can beat Trump.   After 7 years of relentless media browbeating, blackballing, smears and fear-mongering, Trump animates opposition like no one else.   Libs, Indeps and NT Republicans alike will crawl over broken glass to vote for ANYBODY against Trump.   If Trump runs, he’ll get beat.  (I actually concur with that assessment)    DeSantis is an entirely different story.   He presents a genuine threat.   Indeps and even some Dems can see their way clear to voting for DeSantis on the strength of his Covid performance and defense of parental rights in education.    And his negatives aren’t nearly what Trump’s are.   DeSantis can win.   So how to make sure it’s Trump and not DeSantis in 2024?    It’s all about the primaries.

For any Party, the primaries are about appealing to and motivating the base.   It’s time for red meat not nuance.  Bragg’s witch hunt indeed motivates Trump supporters.   But more than that, Republicans feel the need to circle the wagons around Trump.   Supporting DeSantis at a time when Trump is under Democrat assault looks like treachery.   DeSantis even formally declaring his candidacy now looks unseemly.   And that’s the point.    The best and easiest way to beat DeSantis is to keep him off the ballot.    And how delicious if Reps can be maneuvered into ditching him or even better he voluntarily decides not to run!    That’s the end game.   That’s why now.

If Bragg engineers a miracle and actually convicts Trump of a felony in Sept 2024 … that’d be gravy.   But the goal is keeping DeSantis on the bench.

    Too nefarious for me.

What does it take for real Americans to recognize that New York City and coastal California should not be anywhere near the helm?

I think they do recognize it.  They just don’t have any power to do anything about it.
