Song of the Open Road
The sunrise east of Guymon, Okla., where I spent the first eighteen years of my life. I have lived elsewhere for too many years. I love that you can see to the horizons in all directions, that the sky is an upturned bowl from firmament to firmament. The thunderstorms roll in from the southwest with the lightning flailing the earth. Yes, the wind blows; and there can be more dust than rain. But it was a great place to grow up, and I hope to go back there one day.

Maybe this guy’s “Flatlands” would be a good “song for that open road”
Love that area, and that absolutely straight Oklahoma panhandle highway. Look out for roadrunners.
This stretch of OK Hwy 3 is straight for 10.5 miles, but there is another stretch from Hardesty to east of Slapout that is straight for 65.5 miles, which makes it the longest straight length of highway in the US.
That’s the one I’m thinking of. Thanks!
Back in 1967-69 there was a lot of Let-It-Rip on the straight highways around Hutchinson, Kansas. Those were the days when white-tail deer were still exotic in Kansas, and not the deadly omnipresent pest they are today. The irony does not escape me that I complain about deer while remembering 120 in my dad’s big Olds coupe. The highway south of my high school was deserted at night. Better Days.
