Quote of the Day: C. S. Lewis to My Grandfather on Balaam’s Poor Old Donkey

I believe Lewis wrote many letters to readers. This letter is a nice thing for the family to have, but there are probably many others out there. I wonder in how many of them he referenced Balaam’s donkey.

Dear Dr. Boone,

Thank you for your kind and moving letter. You will probably understand that there is terror as well as pleasure in such tributes.  But I steady both emotions by remembering that anyone (even Balaam’s poor old donkey) can be made to serve as an instrument.

Yours sincerely

C. S. Lewis

I don’t believe I’ve ever seen the hard copy. I’m glad my parents got pictures.

Is there any record or family remembrance of what your grandfather wrote to Lewis?

Yes, but it’s thirdhand at best if I go with what’s off the top of my head. I think there may have been some expressions of gratitude for Lewis’ account of a rational faith.

Here we are. I should have checked more carefully. A copy of my grandfather’s letter is preserved.
