Happy Thanksgiving Week

I am off to visit with my 91-year-old mother for the week of Thanksgiving.

I have bought all sorts of food, including six “McRib” Sandwiches which I have frozen, ten foot-long Subway sandwiches, a strawberry rhubarb pie, two potatoes, and four bananas. I will buy Butter Pecan ice cream in Sonoita, when I am only ten miles away from her home.

I have, by and large, put off reading during the general election. I am bringing two to three bankers boxes filled with books to read.

My mother has increasingly had trouble getting out of her “La-Z-Boy” Recliner.  She has gotten one of those expensive “Lift Chairs,” which will help her getting out of the chair and to her walker.  That is so great.

This will be a lovely vacation.  I love being of service to my mother.  I am the oldest of six children.  In all candor, I was more trouble than the other five children combined!  It is time for me to give back to her.  Two of my siblings have passed away, one from being thrown from a horse when she was 12, and one from COPD due to her years old smoking.  My other three siblings are married and have children who they are supporting.  I don’t have my own children, I am self-employed, and I am the oldest child.  I am the logical child to visit with my mother for a week at a time, every 4-6 weeks.

It fills my soul to care for my mother.  I am so blessed.

I just tested for COVID-19.  As expected, my test came back “Negative.”  I would never forgive myself if I were to give my mother Covid.

My mom was pretty well bedridden her last 5 years. (She was much younger than your mom Gary.) As I was the only kid at home and the only girl, I took care of her. It was a great privilege to pay back a little of what she had done for me. Happy Thanksgiving to your mom and family Gary.

If I turned up at my mother’s house with only two potatoes she would be very annoyed 😁

Have a lovely week Gary you sound like a very thoughtful son.

There are just two of us.  But if we had expected a third person, I would have had a third potato.  After heating the potatoes, I dress them with Safeway’s “Steakhouse Chili with Beans.”  I gobble my potato down, her potato usually lasts her two meals.  Delicious!

What a lovely day!  My mother has knocked down a McRib sandwich (eatened in two sittings), half of a Subway sandwich, a Ramon Noodles and a mini-package of carrots.  (I have eaten almost twice as much.)

She is reading “Undaunted Courage” by Stephen Ambrose; I am reading “The Maze” by Nelson DeMille.

Good sons are a rare enough thing. Sounds like your mother is blessed, and has a lot to be grateful for, too.

    Happy Thanksgiving, Gary.

    I agree.

Today she had “Eggo’s” and hard boiled eggs.

My mother can no longer lift the sauce pan onto the range.  I can and I can follow her directions.

“Raise the water to a boil.”

    Then “simmer for 10 minutes.”

Then “leave on the range for 10 minutes.”

    Then “add cold water.”

    Then “bring me two eggs!”

    What a joy!

Gary, It is good that the food items you are bringing are things you know your Mom will treasure. 6 McRibs tells me she has been secluded far too long.

God bless you and your mother.

On Tuesday night I had a stabbing pain in my left eye.  When I woke up the bag under my left eye was twice the size of the bag under my right eye.  My Mom had me go to Urgent Care.  We went to Denny’s.  My mom was exhausted in that she was well past her nap time.  The waitress was great; she was fine with my mom dozing off.  Four hours later I saw a doctor.  She peeled back the lower eye lid and said, “Well, you have an infection, and an antibiotic will knock it out.”  We then went to Walgreens where the antibiotic she prescribed wasn’t on their formulary for Medicare.  It took over an hour to straighten that out.  I bought 2 more potatoes and other comfort food at Safeway, got gas, and two milk shakes at McDonalds.  I have taken 3 of my 20 pills, and I am well on the road to recovery.  When we got home after 5 my mother went straight to bed.

It has been a lovely visit.  I am so blessed.

The exciting news if finding and dipositing of house mouses in traps in the morning!

However, my mother pointed out that she has a friend who has two owls who hunger to eat mouses.  So the last mouse was put in a sandwhich bag that I sealed and then put into the freezer so that it will be ready for the owls.  Yum, yum.
