The Latest Numbers from Arizona (Tuesday Edition)
I was planning to hang up my spurs after last night’s vote dump, but now it feels like a tradition. Here are the numbers as of Tuesday night. No, not Tuesday, Election Night. Arizona has been counting an entire week and still isn’t finished.
Onto the numbers…

All the GOP candidates gained 0.2 percent against their Democratic opponents. Tom Horne (R) has strengthened his lead over the incumbent Superintendent of Public Instruction, leading by 8,576 votes.
In the AG race, Kris Mayes (D) leads Abe Hamadeh (R) by a mere 771 votes.
As of tonight, 28,044 ballots are yet to be counted statewide. Hamadeh needs 51.4 percent of those to win that race.

Does it bother or concern you that your state can’t count ballots within a week?
Thanks Jon. I miss the days AZ ran more Kimberly Yi’s
Kelli Ward is poison. I miss the days of Ed Pastor, Jim Kolbe, and Jon Kyl.
I’m wondering if this feature will ever end…
No offense to Jon, I’m sure. ;-)
I’m hoping a recount will put Lake over the top . . .
Two points. First, I am glad she Lake lost, she told McCain supporters to get the hell out, and announced at CPAC that she had driven a stake into the McCain machine, showing a knifing motion. She wants to exclude me, and I excluded her, while voting for Republicans who were not “Biden Election Deniers.”
Second, she is not within a half percent of Hobbs, so an automatic recount isn’t done. But if Lake wants to pay for one, she entitled to pay for one. Maybe a recount would shut her up.
Arizona has made the policy decision that if someone with a mail-in ballot shows up at the polls, they can drop their ballot off at any polling place in the County. Those are called “Late Early” ballots. Here’s what has to happen with them:
Steps 1-4 all take time. A minute here, a minute there, each step takes time. Multiply that by some quarter of a million votes and that adds up.
The early votes go through the Saturday before the election, so no delay. But if the policy is that we will allow voters to avoid the lines to wait to vote and allow them to just drop off their ballot at any polling place, then that will take time. (Here’s an interesting question. What if you are from a different county, and never got the ballot back to your county? What if you are a student at Northern Arizona University, NAU, and are from Phoenix? Should they mail those ballots to the correct county or not? That is a policy question for the legislature to answer. I think, but am not positive, that the local County Recorder will mail those out-of-county ballots to the correct county.)
I needed to have some things framed. The sign in the framer’s office said, “You can have a job done quickly. You can have a job done cheaply. You can have a job done well. You can’t have all three.” The question is this. In Arizona, our legislature wants early votes to be done carefully, above all else. That will cost you in time for the decision, and for paying overtime.
I will also, note that voters are really, really used to getting their ballots in the mail. They see all of the checks and balances involved. We are willing to pay for more employees to process the ballots and to pay for overtime. We are not willing to give up being able to vote by mail.
I honestly don’t understand how it could take so long to count votes. I live in not-exactly-cutting-edge Alabama. We do not have early voting or mail-in voting. Just absentee ballots and show-up-on-Election-Day. We know who won the next day.
Mail-in voting was adopted by a Republican Legislature. They made that policy decision years ago. One way to make the process quicker is to have a deadline of Saturday before the election to get your mail-in ballots in. There would be no more “Late Early Ballots.”
If you aren’t willing to give up mail in voting and you aren’t going to outlaw GOTV then you won’t have democratic elections. Dueling petition drives are not democracy. If we aren’t going to have democracy, then there are better options than what we have.
But several other states have mail-in voting (OR, WA), and they’re done.
First of all, you never were a Lake supporter in the first place. Therefore her insult had no effect on you.
Second, while her comment about McCain was dumb, thank goodness you’re pro-Democrat rantings will keep you from running office – as a Republican.
Third, I believe a recount is definitely in order, seeing as how your state cannot get the job done in a quick and believable fashion. Florida used to be the laughing stock when it came to counting votes, but now it’s a tie between Georgia, Pennsylvania, and your beloved state.
Hey, former Californian on line two: cut it out. #recount #audit
OK so when do AZ Republican censure Kelli Ward.
Prior to her time AZ had typically had 2 Republican Senators, a Republican Governor and most other state wide positions.
Now!?
The last time Arizona has 2 Democrat Senators and a Democrat Governor was 1950. That’s 72 years ago. Thank you Trump and thank you Kelli Ward. You did this.
Expanded mail in voting is still a relatively new feature in American elections, and whereas it was available in the majority of states without an excuse requirement prior to the 2020 election, it was ramped up considerably at that time. Its widespread availability may have originated in state legislatures and through executive action, but it certainly did not come about by way of voter referendums.
Laziness is not a virtue in American society. Knowing when elections are to be held and where to go vote doesn’t impart any wisdom, but standing in line every two years to do so invites a little thought. I see how mail in voting is convenient, but for important matters don’t we first discern what is necessary? And doesn’t life teach us that we must, at times, discard convenience for the sake of what is good?
Come now, Gary, and tell us about the “disadvantaged” who are “disenfranchised” in the absence of mail in voting. Do you believe disadvantaged patriots would endorse an election system that is compromised for their sake? Do you believe disadvantaged patriots would applaud an election system that peddles the vote to clueless bums and ineligible voters, all of whom btw number among your fellow Arizonans?
As If. Like nobody has been flooding in from the People’s Republic of California over the past seven decades?
Sure, Gary. Sure.
