Ron DeSantis for President

He’s a superstar. He turned a fraction of a percent win four years ago to what looks like about a 20% win. He earned votes. He won people over, people from the right and the middle, and possibly even from the left. He did what was right. He led, and he won over one of the biggest states in the country.

Run, Ron, run. You got my vote.

Hey, let’s not be so hasty.  Isn’t DeSantis too young?  Shouldn’t somebody be at least 70 before we start considering them for president? I think George Pataki is our man.  He’s 77 and still alive.

It won’t hurt Trump that much because his die-hard disciples will never find that he is to blame for anything.

After his comments about DeSantis today and a few days ago, Trump has reminded me very forcefully of why I don’t want him as the nominee. I will not vote for any Democrat, but I certainly won’t be voting for Trump. I’m tired of foolish old men in the Oval Office.

Don’t like President Trump. I get that. But it’s always better to talk about individuals than to insult groups of people.

I don’t have a problem with having men in the Oval Office. And their age does not matter to me either. I’ve known many very wise, very smart, very accomplished men of all ages.

And Biden has been stupid for a lot longer than either he or Trump has been “old.”

Sorry, but though I too have known many wise and sharp older men and women – including my late great Dad, who at his death at 94 was still cheerful, independent, and sharp – the presidency is simply beyond the very natural mental slowdown that occurs when any person is in or nears their 80s. We need someone younger as a nominee, quite apart from Trump’s poor judgment in his recent statements. The man is an albatross on the neck of the GOP .

I’m not sure what you mean here. If you mean that the GOP primary voters dutifully did what Trump told them to do and so put forward some questionable candidates, well yes, that was certainly a self-inflicted wound without any outside help. Hopefully they’ll learn from the experience, though I’m not optimistic.

I mean it’s more about the voters voting for who they want in the primaries, and then people like McConnell back-stab and deny funding etc.

The Trump negative effect was multi faceted. Not only was he a drag as a person but it helped the Dems by (1) fund raising and (2) constantly harp with negative news for Republicans with the Jan 6th events and (3) split the Republicans.  I know it’s a small demographic but we as a minority party can’t afford to lose anyone.

If the Trump brand wanes and the imprimatur of endorsement fades, the next election will have all sorts of candidates freed from ring-kissing. Strong horse / weak horse, and all that.

I have no idea of Trump is vain enough to run again, but by 2024, none of  the necessary independents will care about 1/6, Russiagate, FISA court malfeasance, or any of the issues that would motivate Trump to seek electoral vindication. By 2024 he’ll be a relic of the bad days of unrest and COVID, accomplishments forgotten, and running him again for POTUS would be a bright broad statement that the GOP has nothing new to offer.

Didn’t he tease a big announcement on Nov 15th?

Then again, I’ve long wondered if he’d pull a Sarah Palin.  She kept hinting she might run in 2012, which kept her in the media spotlight, even though I suspect she never had any actual intention to run.

Polls showed that few people even on the left, thought 1/6 was a big deal.

Setting aside the actual fact that you are stupid to not use government to steal from your fellow citizen, voters are actually willing to vote against their own self interest, in the name of fill-in-the-blank. And then there are actually a lot of people that are left in a variety of policy positions and stupidity.

It’s 2:30am in Seattle, but here I lie in my cozy bed, barely able to keep my eyes open, watching  the  last of the returns  crawling across the tv screen like an old mama turtle. I do this in the hope that Laxalt, Johnson and Walker will pull ahead enough  to give us majority in the Senate. This election hasn’t been the huge red wave we all wanted, but at least we’ll have the House.  Contributing to our disappointment with the results, IMHO, was believing the pollsters and pundits who spiked the ball before the end zone. I feel sorry for the losing  candidates who paid consultants and pollsters huge bucks to give them bad advice.

Nope, you can’t have him. I want him to stay in Florida where he can keep doing good things. You guys fix your own problems locally.

Seriously, though, governors can do more good where they are than by going to the Swamp. A smart guy once observed, “All politics is local.”
