Trudeau to Impose 30% Reduction in Fertilizer Use
In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the Canadian PM wants to reduce fertilizer use by 30% by 2030. A totally impracticable goal that will reduce farm productivity, massively cut farm income, and essentially eliminate Canada’s agricultural exports.
But the news has been met with disdain by farm and agriculture groups in the country that argue imposing such restrictions will shift production to higher-cost, less efficient countries.
“The world is looking for Canada to increase production and be a solution to global food shortages. The federal government needs to display that they understand this,” Alberta Minister of Agriculture Nate Horner said last week in response to the news.
Farming is a major sector of the Canadian economy. In 2021, the country exported nearly $82.2 billion in agriculture and food products, and the agriculture and agrifood sector accounts for roughly 6.8% of its annual gross domestic product.
So I think the real question is: why do they hate Black, Brown, and Yellow peoples. If Canada follows through with this insane plan, Canada’s ability to export any agricultural products would disappear. This will lead to shortages and higher prices here – but starvation in Africa, South and East Asia. Why do liberals hate these people so much that they’d starve them?
Could it be, that they’ve failed mathematics (not to mention logic and ethics) so completely that they don’t understand that their policy to save future peoples from a theoretical environmental disaster hundreds of years in the future will kill people now?

Feature not a bug.
But that doesn’t mean they aren’t evil.
Is it just stupidity? For folks who support them probably, but how does it benefit him and his crowd? As pointed out they get to buy up land and, if we continue to crank down on petroleum based products, we’ll get poorer and the poor countries may get richer. Better impoverish them sooner rather than later. Then there’s the Chinese, which is where most leftist leaders show a deeper ignorance. They don’t seem to understand that the largest, most complex economy in human history can’t be run from the top and Canada is tied to us and will go down with us. Of course we’ll be replaced by China but they can’t run a global capitalist economy from above either, but unlike our techno fools, know it, so they won’t just sit around. They’ll have to find accelerated ways to destroy us. Maybe not, maybe we’ll sort it all out and come back. When we’re run from the top by evil folks and idiots what is the probability of that?
Exactly what I was thinking. Yes, absolutely. Of course, there’s only so much they can do, but I’ll try prayer for them. They are the smartest of us.
Yes, and our apple trees and vegetable garden.
I understand from the discussion here that it’s not a solution. But I’d be lying if I said wasn’t impressed with the results in our yard from applications of micronutrients. But it is a “hobby,” not a big farm meant to feed lots of people.
I was trying to find some hope in a very bleak prediction for the future, which unbelievably may come to pass.
Nice!
When I was a kid nearly everyone had a kitchen garden in the back yard. Potatoes, Corn, beans peas rhubarb I imagine most people ate frozen or canned vegetables for most of the winter from their tiny back yard plots.
Now looking around the city – almost nobody has a garden. At least I dont see them if they do.
I’ve been thinking about Terra Preta. Its the naturally formulated fertilizer that Amazon natives used to turn the poor soils of the Amazon Basin into some of the most productive farm land any where…

The legend of Eldorado:
So instead of using chemical fertilizers, could we use charcoal formulas?
I have been unable to find a longer version of the interview with Gerry Ritz from Tucker.
Charcoal contains no nitrogen, whether fixed or not. Fixed nitrogen is the key ingredient in almost all fertilizers.
So, no.
Limiting nitrogen? It composes about 78% of the atmosphere.
Better get busy, Justin.
The banks of Canada have decided that he needs to go. They will keep raising the interest rate till hes done.
No the operational theory, is that the charcoal being porous provide a home for bacteria to live – the waste products from these bacterial colonies fertilize the soil…
Some quick googling:
Trudeau’s worried about nitrous oxide which comprises all of 331 parts per billion, i.e., 0.0000331%. Is that something to worry about? The longevity of nitrous oxide in the atmosphere is thought to be 140 years.
The emissions of nitrous oxide are growing primarily in India, China and Brazil with their increased use of fertilizer. So the solution is for Canada and the Netherlands to cut the use of fertilizer by 30%. What impact will this have on global nitrous oxide emissions and what impact will this have on Canadian agriculture? Is it worth it?
Nope.
Here is an article from Reason about some recent breakthroughs in genetically engineering rice that increases yield while decreasing the need for fertilizer.
Working towards less fertilizer use is not a bad thing, but you can’t just declare “No more fertilizer” and think everything will work out.
Sure you can. They are the government and declare anything they want. Out job is to just live with their vast stupidity
Or die by their vast stupidity.
Except the same people who are for limiting fertilizer are against GMO foods, so your solution won’t work because they are stuck on stupid.
Oh, I know. I am just saying that it is scientifically possible to grow more food and use less fertilizer. It’s just not politically possible. But things can change. People say, “Sure I’d love to see more nuclear power plants, but most Americans oppose them.” But I’ve seen recent surveys that show most Americans do support more nuclear power. Perhaps people will come around on GMO food, eventually.
One can but hope. I would be satisfied is more people understood that food comes from a farm and not from the grocery store.
