ACF Europe #19: Divided We Fall
Fellow Ricochetti, I recommend my new podcast with Flagg Taylor about totalitarianism in Central Europe. This time, it’s a war story, by turns comic and dramatic, called Divided We Fall. It’s about a Czech family with a German friend who is also hiding a Jewish friend from the Nazis, until the Soviet Communists come in and there is something of a reversal of roles. It’s very enjoyable and you’re sure to want to think more about its artistry and the humanity of the writer-director couple Petr Jarchovsky and Jan Hrebejk, who made another movie recently featured on our podcast, about the end of totalitarianism, The Teacher. It was nominated for the Oscar in 2000, but alas it did not win. It deserves applause.
