Ricochet Podcast Question Time!

Good people of Ricochet, lend us your Qs!

For this week’s flagship podcast, our world famous (right?) hosts will be answering the questions. And they’ll be coming from you. Unfortunately Peter is off this week, but are there any inquiries you’ve had for Rob, James and Charles Cooke – who’s subbing for Mr. R? Whether you’re wondering about their take on hot button issues or their thoughts on culture; maybe you’d like to know about what they do when they aren’t podcasting, or how they got into their line of work. If you wanna know, we wanna know that you wanna know.

Hit them with your best shot in the comments to hear their answers this Friday, July 15th.

Rob has stated that rather than the conservative donors give to another think tank, they should invest in entertainment and studios. The daily wire has done that? Has any of the three watched any of the feature films or documentaries that the Dailywire created? If so, what are the reviews of the product?

Invest in entertainment and studios? To make more comic book character movies and another sequel to Star Wars or Jurassic Park? With all the good books out there to turn into movies?

So I am wondering has it just gotten too expensive to make feature films – since Covid, ESG Guidelines, inflation, i.e. resession, the repressive restrictions that CA has on everything, etc. and that is why the entertainment industry is stuck in the past?  It must be difficult for writers, actors, and all staff that goes into the entertainment business to make ends meet.  There can’t be that many waiter jobs available…… I’m not being snarky – but it must be a challenge to keep the entertainment business going.  Not seeing much work from the top actors anymore……

When is Cruise’s next Mission Impossible movie coming out?  I guess this could be all directed to Rob, but anyone with some answers would work.

Do you guys think that higher education ever actually developed human capital at a fair price or was something else going on? A million years ago when I was in college I was always surprised at the number of  people with high standardized test scores that thought that liberal arts classes were a complete waste of time. I mean they were really angry about it and they thought you were really stupid if you didn’t agree with them. Now, unless you are a brain dead lefty, everybody’s angry about all of it except STEM.

Personally, I think they need to find a way to wipe out accreditation for all except the top 20%. Let the rest of it be ale a carte.

There is so much cynicism about going to trade school because you’ll make more money and ROI, and the implication is the rest of it never had any value, really. Nobody ever frames it that way.

Personally, I’m suspicious of not enough people getting some type of higher education to keep the ruling class in line.

GEORGIA: What does a citizen of the State do about the US Senate election coming up? Here in Georgia I’m inclined to write in “Kelvin King” — one of the losers in the primary — because the Republican politician running for the office has shown such poor judgment and is simply not prepared. For a list of problems, see John McWhorter’s assessment of the candidate (yes, yes, I know he’s a Democrat, but John’s facts still stand).

For years I’ve operated by the rule “pick the least obnoxious of the two.” (In the case of voting for Trump in 2016 and 2020, I reasoned that if he were impeached, we’d have President Pence.) Would you recommend going with that principle, or should I sit this one out?

Question:  Given the inflation impacts, how do you think the Fed and Congress will try to unwind both the semi-sub-moronic ZIRP policies, and debt-fueled spending, both of which have contributed to so many dollars sloshing around the economy?  How does it end, and when, meaning the inflationary impacts?

    Good luck on your answers.

    Hi everyone!

When the dust settles, whenever that may be, how do you think the “abortion map of America” will look? I see that contrary to some Conservative pundits Abortion is illegal in Texas right now.  Jonah Goldberg said in one of his “remnants” that most European states have an abortion law similar to Mississippi. Well according to the planned parenthood site, Abortion is illegal in Mississippi (with few exceptions). The second part of the question will be, what it’s true?

Some conservative commentators take pride in not having voted for either of the two major candidates for president in the last two cycles. I regard this as a cop out. Do you? Why?

Prideful, straight up. They need to feel like they’re playing chess, but we checkers spoil that dream.

I wish Mr. Robinson was on the podcast for this one (I mean no offense to Mr. Cooke; he is someone I would go to with almost any question other than this): how do you reconcile the transcendent surety and trust at the root of your faith with the comparatively insignificant, but no less real, feelings of uncertainty and anxiety that often arise in everyday life despite that faith?  I ask this sincerely as a relatively new Catholic interested in the experiences of Mr. Long and Mr. Lileks, not as someone challenging the contradiction.

Charlie in particular, why don’t pro-Second Amendment folks (myself included) attack the lack of enforcement of gun laws already on the books, especially given that recent mass shooters were known to local authorities? I worry that the red flag provisions in the new gun-control bill will hurt the innocent far more than the guilty.

I realize that this was almost certainly meant to be facetious.

If it had been a serious request, I think that the correct answer is something like, go to Hell.  You know very well what a woman is.  If you really don’t, you’re more ignorant than a kindergarten student, and belong in an institution for the cognitively impaired.

I suppose that this is mostly in Rob’s wheelhouse, but I’m sure all have thoughts.

Marta Kauffman, co-creator of Friends has been on an apology tour for various “insensitivities” in one of the most popular sitcoms in history.  Is this a trend?  Who else will fall?  Kauffmann donated a lot of money to Brandeis, her alma mater, as penance.  Is she still receiving royalties from the show’s syndication?

The history around the Second Amendment.

    To the pannel:

If laws of the founding era, 1776-1791, allowed for, and sometimes required, men to own weapons and ammo, for their miltia service, are claims of “no one would have allowed “weapons of war””, a valid grounds for limiting a consitutional right?

It’s communism. I heard Newt Gingrich talking about this. Stakeholder capitalism is not about raising living standards with more output per dollar, it’s about communism.

It is shameful that the Republicans aren’t forcing them to just outlaw what they want to outlaw instead of retarding capital where it’s needed for life.

Many truly excellent and creative ideas for raising revenue have been offered by Ricochet members on dozens of different threads since we all learned of the lawsuit. TPTB are steadfastly opposed to implementing any of them aside from gift memberships, tier upgrades, and shopping (Rico store and/or advertisers).

    Why is this?

Is the abortion issue the main dividing line between conservatives and liberal/progressives? I think it is with exceptions. One exception is the fact that my father is very conservative except that he is liberal on abortion.

The liberal provision of the Plan B pill solves everything.

How does anybody including the government force anybody to do all but the -D level of prenatal care?

Planned Parenthood has been proven to have abortion quotas because they have so much overhead and the executives like making money.

Stop the legal threats and you get a better world because more people will vote GOP.

This may need to be re-phrased, since the “red flag” stuff is specifically about people who are not yet guilty of anything.

It does seem odd that as self-avowed capitalists running a business, they’re somehow trying to pretend like all costs of doing business aren’t eventually borne by the customers.

Rob has talked up Lucky Jim as one of the funniest novels ever written.

I just finished reading it over the weekend, and I didn’t laugh once. What am I missing?

(And don’t try to tell me I don’t get British literature/humor. I love PG Wodehouse, who makes me laugh out loud.)

This book was the subject of The Great Books podcast (NR’s John Miller) last month, give it a listen, might help.

Peter – He must be disappointed (or maybe appalled?) in the current state of political discourse, what do you think could be done to restart reasonable rational political discourse again? It also seems to me, that with a few exceptions, the current political class is humorless if not completely witless. In our nostalgia, have we exaggerated the wit and charm of Ronald Reagan?

Rob – Even if someone buys a movie studio (Sony is for sale) could anyone make a go of it? Could they get talent to sign on to make movies that the elitists will not like? (I would think that money talks, Bullfeathers walk – but you look at the glee some actors and producers burn money to make propaganda – makes me wonder that a project with a traditional American values message could even get made) Could anyone make a traditional American movie for Main Street America? With little or no foreign box office? Are Hollywood movies doomed to be forever stuck in the SuperHero Monster bashes that are easily translatable for foreign box offices? As stereotyped and predictable as any Bollywood film – but less fun.

Charles – I was going to ask what went wrong… But then I see wikipedia claims that you’re a fluent French speaker and a Francophile. So never mind.
