Posting Under the Influence of Chocolate
My chocolatier died back in 2019 or maybe it was early 2020. He and his wife had already sold the shop shortly before then. The new owners started messing with how the chocolate was sold and the prices. For years, we had been buying a half-pound box of chocolates for most of our family members at Christmas. Suddenly, they no longer sold it in half-pound boxes. There were seven-ounce boxes and fourteen-ounce boxes. And the price seemed to have jumped a lot to get less chocolate. When I said something, the new owner promptly blamed the old owner, “They hadn’t raised the prices in 25 years!” Except, that wasn’t true. I had been coming there longer than that, and the price had been less five years ago and less than that ten years ago, and so forth. Well, good luck to the new owners there, but lie to me and blame my friends, you won’t get my business. But it left me without a good chocolate source.
But, there is this guy on Ricochet, @bobw, who has mentioned that he is involved in the chocolate trade. The last time he mentioned it, I took note of it. Now, Bob and his shop are in California, and I am in Michigan. But, I figured if their chocolate is good, is reasonably priced, and Bob supports Ricochet as a member, they would be worth a try. My wife’s birthday is coming up. It seemed like a good time to try out Pieces of Heaven and see how the chocolate is, and then if they pass the test maybe get some for the wife when her birthday rolls around. They passed the test.
I got a sampler of truffles, some butter toffee popcorn, and then a few individual items to make it worthwhile to have an order shipped from California to Michigan in the late spring coming into summer. My wife likes orange, so one of the other items was a box of orange butter creams. All that I can say is, Oh my goodness Gracious! I don’t know if the rest of you have a favored high-end chocolatier, but I have one once more. Also, the butter toffee popcorn is addictive. I highly recommend them.
Thanks, Ricochet, for bringing us together.

Well, we were very fond of the Rogers Victoria Creams we used to get in Victoria, BC. But we will never be able to go there now, so we might have to mail-order.
It was nice dealing with PoH. Peggy W. made sure to ship it on Monday so it wouldn’t be stuck in a warehouse over the weekend.
Often it’s those little things that matter when dealing with businesses.
@bobw
Arahant, I am wondering how many lives this post will save.
Count my life among them!
Here to serve. 😜
I didn’t know such things were possible 😁
I’m not that fond of chocolate so it makes my boycott of one Irish chocolate peddler rather redundant but you know, you have to have principles. I’m so unchocolatey I can’t even think of the name of it but it’s everywhere in Dublin. I don’t remember the precise details of why I’m mad at them either but I know they started it, whatever their name is.
Sounds like an epic feud.
There was family involved
Notre Dame was not wide of the mark with the nickname Fighting Irish.
Thank you @Arahant for the nice “review”. We are a small “mom & pop” shop in Carmel, Calif. Our chocolates are all hand made in small batches.
We extend an invitation to all Ricochet to stop by, please let us know if in the area so we can be at the store. So far the only one I know that has stopped in was DocJ, Peggy had his kids make some chocolates.
I’m not too likely to be in the neighborhood, but I will be ordering again. The truffles are excellent. Amaretto, key lime, mint, cherry, such a selection.
We have shipped to Maine, Fla., Alaska and Hawaii to name a few, just gets a little iffy in the Summer. But have had good results with Priority Mail.
By the way I lived in Farmington Hills a few years ago, don’t think that’s too far from where you are.
No, not far at all. I’m in Troy.
I’m reaching for my Ghirardelli as I type. (And I don’t even like chocolate, but the creamy caramel inside…!)
My mother’s favorite! Was always my last stop before leaving town.
My mother is gone, and … alas, I’ve lost my sweet tooth. But will stop by Pieces of Heaven next time I’m in Carmel.
