A Site Worth Supporting
Dear Ricochet Friend –
We need your help. We really do.
If you haven’t heard, we were hit with a lawsuit earlier this year.
The good news is the case has been settled and we are in the process of paying the negotiated settlement. However, it has been very painful and infuriating to have to pay an amount that is WAY, WAY out of whack with the actual “damages” incurred.
Because of the arcane copyright laws and the restrictive damages guidelines in place, we were strongly advised to settle rather than fight this. So that’s what we did.
But, again, we really need your help!
We have received numerous emails and messages from the community who want to donate money to us. While we very much appreciate the generosity, Ricochet (or Silent Cal Productions, LLC) is a for-profit corporation and as such, we really can’t take donations. There’s simply no mechanism for us to do that.
If you want to help get through this difficult moment, please consider signing up for a Ricochet Membership. Memberships start at $5 a month. Many of our subscribers joined without any intention of participating. While some have remained quiet supporters who have our undying gratitude, no small share jumped in to become a part of an online community like no other. (And we’re not just online! Come join us at one of our meetups.)
Or maybe buy a product from one of our sponsors. Every little bit helps.
All of this helps us keep the community growing. And thriving.
Thank you for reading this.
Sincerely,
Rob Long, Peter Robinson, and Scott Immergut
Life is about being able to afford lawyers and lobbyists.
Sorry to hear about this. Litigation against various entities seems to be a way for many in America with a law degree, or familial connections to one, to keep their bank accounts healthy.
What was the lawsuit concerning and why is the outrageous amount not being appealed?
Dude, we donated money before.
How is that not possible now?
Call it a “tip jar” and let fly.
The crazy thing that would happen if there were a ton of “ghost memberships” is that your stats would end up all out of whack.
Tell you what.
Offer “Scholarships”, invite former members to return and I’ll sponsor a few. (or we could call them “Sponsorships”, I don’t care.)
Truthfully, I’d like to talk to the Dime again – @10cents
Another idea – offer preloaded account cash for purchases in the swag store. Then you get bucks, while I have a Rico-Bank for my Christmas shopping.
There is probably an Non Disclosure Agreement in place.
Leftie sued for copyright violation on some picture they used, I think.

No, I haven’t heard. What on earth was the complaint?
See #6.
You’re right…. but I’ve never liked learning lessons!
If there is, it’s long since been violated… since Rob potentially broke the rules, I’ll fill you in.
We have a system to catch copyrighted photos that are uploaded, but it didn’t work, and one of our contributors used a picture that was circulating all over Google during the (I suppose ongoing) border crisis in Texas. It would appear that Ricochet was singled out as a lawsuit target because “we” used the image for right-wing purposes.
Not very informative.
Try #10
Yeah, that worked. How terribly lazy of me. Thanks.

Was the member who posted it notified?
I’m told he feels real bad about it. I think he was an innocent though.
Does whoever provided the software that was supposed to catch it, have any responsibility?
Whew. It wasn’t me.
I’m in. Let’s go.
Great to have you with us, Robert!
