Catholic University of America Honors Jimmy Lai

I have written about the CCP and about Jimmy Lai before, his legal battles against Xi, the shuttering of his Apple Daily, but the news I received today touched me very deeply. No, Xi has not discovered the courage and decency to release the great man. He still trembles in the threat of the truth. The walls that have sprung up in DC are a mere echo of Xi’s own measures.

But all of Xi’s measures did not protect him from a new humiliation. From a May 14 story in the National Catholic Register:

The Catholic University of America on Saturday awarded an honorary degree to imprisoned Hong Kong human-rights advocate Jimmy Lai. His adult son, Sebastien Lai, accepted the award on his father’s behalf.

The younger Lai spoke about the university’s recognition of his father in an interview with EWTN’s Raymond Arroyo earlier this week.

“It really means a lot to have the support of all these great people,” he said on The World Over May 12.

Somewhere around October, we will hear whether the CCP will effectively make the coward Xi Jinping dictator for life or choose a new direction. A new direction might be better, it might be worse. That government runs on terror and disinformation, they solder people in their apartments for the crime of living in a building where a Covid case has been detected. Many starve to death as a result, some reportedly survive, the starvation deaths are not reported as Covid so the stats look good, and former Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York takes notes against the prospect of some future reelection.

But today I noticed that a blow was struck, however measured, against the wicked tyrant in honor of the great man by my alma mater, and I raise a glass.

Lord, please free Jimmy Lai, the people of Hong Kong, and the people of the People’s Republic of China from these dark souls and bring them into the light. Amen.

Happy Easter.

Hate to admit I was not aware of Jimmy Lai before now. Thanks for bringing him to my attention.

When I saw the title, I didn’t remember who Jimmy Lai was, so I interpreted it as a woke university giving out undeserved honors to some leftist.

Moral:  Add a few clarifying words to the title.

The Acton Institute awarded Jimmy Lai its highest honor a couple of years ago and he sent a recorded message. Very moving. I’ll try to find a link when I get back to my computer.

Thank you for this post about Jimmy Lai. With the arrest of Cardinal Zen and his trial on May 24th, currently the holiest men in the Church are in Hong Kong. Certainly not in the Vatican. Good for The Catholic University.

Here’s the short video about Acton’s Faith and Freedom Award to Jimmy Lai, but there are many others with Fr. Sirico interviewing Jimmy, etc. Just search “Acton Jimmy Lai.”
