Hogan vs. DeSantis, Who You Got?

Maryland’s Republican Governor Larry Hogan admits that he never read the Parental Rights in Education bill (the one Disney calls the “Don’t Say Gay” bill) but that didn’t stop him from throwing shade at Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

“I didn’t really actually see the details of the legislation, but the whole thing seems like … just a crazy fight,” Hogan said.  “It concerns me that DeSantis is always talking about, he was not demanding businesses do things but he was telling the cruise lines what they had to do, he was telling local schools what they had to be mandating and now he wants to criticize Disney for expressing how they feel about that bill. I mean, they have every right to, we have a thing called Freedom of Speech,” he continued. “They can come out and say what they think. I think the bill was kind of absurd, and not something that would’ve happened in our state.”

He’s right about that; a bill protecting parental rights in education would never have passed in Maryland. And hearing a politician who mandated lockdowns, masks, and vaccines in his state complaining about DeSantis “telling the cruise lines what they had to do, he was telling local schools what they had to be mandating” was just precious.

Let’s take a look at how Mr. Hogan compares to Mr. DeSantis, won’t you?

Ron DeSantis’s conservative accomplishments: Signed an executive order calling for the end of Common Core in Florida; resisted mask and vaccine mandates; passed extensive voter integrity law; sent Florida law enforcement to Texas to shore up the border; signed law to hold big tech accountable for violations of civil liberties; enacted $168 million state tax cut; signed a ban on sanctuary cities in Florida; banned the use of activist funding for elections (“Zuckerbucks”); signed Parental Rights in Education act.

Larry Hogan’s conservative accomplishments: Lowered the fare on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge; repealed the previous governor’s rain tax; didn’t sign off on a Democrat gerrymandering plan to eliminate the state’s last remaining Republican district. (Strike that, Hogan signed the Democrats’ redistricting map Monday afternoon). On the other hand, he has maintained Maryland’s “Sanctuary State” status and aggressively embraced the left-wing’s climate change agenda.

Some people are thinking this guy should run for president. Notably, these are the same people who endorsed Terry McAuliffe for governor of Virginia. So, they don’t want him to win and they aren’t really going to vote for him, but they want him to run.

By the way, Larry, when they are informed of the actual content of the Parental Rights in Education law versus what the media tell them is in the law, it’s supported by the majority of voters.

It is one thing for comedians and pundits to make fun of a law and give it a nickname without understanding what the law actually says.  One would expect a governor to withhold comments on another state’s law without actually learning what is in it.  That’s not a matter of left vs. right, it’s a matter of professionalism.

A local TV station in MD heard about a high school protest of the Florida law, so it went there and interviewed some of the well-informed students.

The interviews they actually showed on camera were students who seem to have an obsession with purple and green hair dye. Of course, the reporter just asked “Why are you protesting?” and listened to the kids’ sappy regurgitations, instead of asking them “What’s in this law that makes it so terrible?”, and then pointing out to them that they have no clue what the law actually says. That might be actual “journalism.”

They both want to be President in 24.   I hope to vote for DeSantis;  if Hogan’s the nominee we are doomed and I will vote 3rd party for President.

My Governor, Meh. The legislators walked right over his head when they wanted to. He was just a little speed bump on their path to utopia.

You said:   “(Strike that, Hogan signed the Democrats’ redistricting map Monday afternoon).”

I absolutely disagree.  The 2011 gerrymander had terrible lines snaking all over Maryland, with Sarbanes’ district looking like a snake that had been run over by three cars, zigzagging from Baltimore to D.C. to Annapolis

The new map has compact “logical” districts with straight lines with the following eight districts:  One “likely” Republican district at R+25, a pure toss up district at R+1, two “lean” Democrat districts at D+11 and D+14, a one “likely” Democrat districts at D+28, and three “strong” Democrat districts at D+53, D+55 and D+75.

What do those numbers mean?  A D+75 means that Democrat Anthony Brown should win his seat by 75%, or somewhere on the order of 87% to 12%.  On the other hand an R+1 district means that a Republican should win that district by 1%, or 50.5-40.5%, a toss up to be sure.

Any Democrat who wins in a D+11 or D+14, let alone a R+1, district cannot be a clone of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) who has a D+50 district or Ilhan Omar (who has a D+57 district), they have to have a brain.  As long as we don’t run a Paul Gosar (who has a hyper safe R+53 district) or a Marjorie Taylor Greene (who has a R+45 district) we are favored to win in the R+1 district by 1% of the vote.

With all due respect, you are not aware of something.  Larry Hogan used to have “normal” male pattern baldness.  After having cancer and chemotherapy and losing all of his hair and eyebrows and eyelashes, Hogan has kept a shaven head.  The people of Maryland see Hogan as a brave man who never complained about having cancer.  (I am a cancer survivor who now keeps a shaven head.)  I think that when the public realize why Hogan keeps a shaved head, I think that they will forgive that.

Larry Hogan is the second most popular Republican Governor in the United States.  He was only the second Republican Governor to be re-elected in very blue Maryland, and the first since a Theodore McKeldin was re-elected in 1954, sixty-eight years ago.

I wouldn’t rule out Hogan’s chance of winning the nomination too quickly.  I think he stands a fairly good chance of beating George Pataki.  Yes, Pataki is still alive, I just checked!

The 6th district should have included Carroll county, which is politically and culturally aligned with the rest of West Maryland. Instead, Carroll county gets attached to the Democrat suburbs north and west of Baltimore. Instead, they kept in Democrat suburbs of Montgomery county in the 6th; which have nothing in common with the rest of the district except they keep it Democrat.

Oh ye of little faith!  Matthew 8:26.

If we run a non-MTG/Gosar Republican, and/or Democrats run an AOC and/or Ilhan Omar, we will win that district.  If this is a race between two relatively moderate candidates, it will be one heck of a close race.  At a minimum, it will drain Democrat coffers.

A R+1 district is by definition a slightly Republican district.  With the midterm tailwinds, I hope that we win it.

I’ve lived in Maryland and now in FL. I’m glad to be in FL – we love our governor.  Anyone who thinks it’s a good idea to teach  – sex anything at all – let alone the LGBTQ plus agenda to kindergarten through third grade is deranged and make me angry…. The bill does not say don’t say gay – it never did. Gays have all the rights they want in FL, but what is taught to children is protected because children need to be protected and that should fall to the parents.

It’s got to be made clear that these POS republicans aren’t going to get elected dog catcher. What we need is a Reagan-Ike ticket. I’m thinking that Carson-Gabbard might do the trick… Todd Semonite for SECDEF.

Smart people who will get the right things done, let us all make money doing it, and America prospers.

I have faith that the GOPe and the Dems to do what’s best for the Dems. Neither of them give a rat’s ass about the citizen class.

Every problem we face in America today is a direct result of government policy. Direct result. If they were deliberately trying to destroy the citizen class, they wouldn’t be doing anything different. So I must assume it’s deliberate.

Sometimes God sends his people into exile.   If we turn away from God,  he has ways to make his displeasure clear.      Current American society is opposed to God.   Eventually there are consequences.   I am just trying to keep my own friends and family faithful,   but when God punishes a society even the faithful remnant are punished.

And on that note, I’m a bit despondent this morning because our school district has been making national news for the same sorts of nonsense that Loudon County is famous for. Nevertheless, the three people who were running for school board in opposition to that did not get voted in. Instead, yesterday, the citizens chose the same woke university profs who got us into this predicament.

And this is why we still homeschool.
