Trivia Question for the Football Fans Out There…

Who was the last Ohio college to beat the Ohio State Buckeyes? Ohio State has won an impressive 43 straight in-state games since that loss, but they have lost to Ohio opponents before. Do you know who beat them?

In 1921, immediately after winning the Rose Bowl, Ohio State lost to Oberlin, by a score of 7-6. Ohio State’s only touchdown was on a blocked punt, and they missed the extra point. The game was in Columbus, in front of 10,000 fans.

This year, the Buckeyes are 10-1, and Oberlin is 1-9 (beating only Hiram College 31-28). So if a rematch was held today, it might go differently. But you never know. And apparently, Ohio State doesn’t want to find out – they didn’t schedule Oberlin this year.

From their website: Oberlin is committed to a climate where all students belong and have equitable opportunities and outcomes. The GSFS department often partners with the Multicultural Resource Center to host events affirming and promoting equity for LGBTQ+ students as well as students of color and first-generation college students.

My sainted mother went to Oberlin for a year and a half before transferring to Denison. In the late ’60s, the trend was for every white girl to have a black boyfriend. And they all did. When I played at Denison in the late ’80s, the trend was homosexuality. The whole campus was gay. Oberlin had a football dorm and a straight dorm, and they were the same dorm. I’m not sure what the trend is now, and I hate to think what the trend there might be in 10-20 years.

But whatever the trend is, I’m sure they’ll all follow it. Nothing is as terrifying to a progressive as independent thought.

My point is that Oberlin has changed. My niece is a junior there right now, majoring in Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies. Imagine going to a party with those folks. And then imagine going to a tailgate party tomorrow for the Ohio State – Michigan game. Where would you have more fun? Where would you meet more fun people, who are more interesting to talk to? Where would you make new friends that you would keep up with later?

Anyway, for some reason, Oberlin’s football team has not thrived with these recent changes. And Oberlin College has not thrived, either. Applications are way down, and they’re having serious cash flow problems.

Ohio State is doing quite well, thank you. And they seem quite happy about things. While Oberlin students seem miserable. I guess the Buckeyes have gotten over their loss to Oberlin 100 years ago. Might as well let bygones be bygones, and have another beer, I suppose. Happiness is the best revenge, and all that…

Academia will be unrecognizable soon. It already is, come to think of it.

I can’t wait for the big game Saturday. I refer, of course, to the Ohio State – Michigan game.

I’m not sure who Oberlin is playing. Eh — nobody cares. About Oberlin in general, I mean. As it should be. Anybody who takes themselves as seriously as Oberlin does should not be taken seriously by anybody else.

Those who pursue joy tend to attract a following. Even if they sometimes look ridiculous doing it. Go Buckeyes!

Our obsession with something as unimportant as football is a sign of the health of our society. When everyone mopes around like an Oberlin student, or a Democrat activist, then we have serious problems.

God bless football. God bless joy. And God bless America.

Perfect example of the aphorism “Get woke, go broke”.

The only positive outcome I could hope for your niece would be Oberlin’s financial collapse and closure before she can complete her degree, saving her from the permanent stain of “success” with that.  (Not that she would be able to see that now.)

I’m more familiar with Notre Dame, I attended a sister school to ND. Notre Dame athletes must live on campus for the first three years at ND. There are no co-ed dorms at ND, and student athlete’s are assigned non-student athletes as roommates. There are no athletic dorms at ND.

There are no “Bunny Majors” for athletes. For example athletes aren’t offered a Recreational, or a Hospitality Management Degree. They must choose a major that is offered to all students.

This doesn’t mean that there aren’t student advocacy groups at ND that aren’t pushing for Woke policies on campus. As one priest put it in the Congregation of Holy Cross religious order (CSC) of the university I attended; “We are not going to let the lunatics run the asylum.”

ND is one of the smaller schools in the top division of college football. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 8,874 (fall 2020).

There is an active conservative group of alumni, and like-minded students. Justice Clarence Thomas was invited to speak on campus, and the campus didn’t go crazy.

There are some at ND that would love to go Woke, but so far ND has managed to hold the line, and it has been painful at times.

This post was hilarious!  The link to Oberlin’s Gender Sexuality, and Feminist Studies, is also a hoot!

My wife and I spent Thanksgiving dinner at my nephew’s family’s house in New Russia Township, a mere three or four miles from Oberlin College.  My nephew’s brother-in-law George, a policeman, and his family came in from Amish country in Middlefield.  We watched the Detroit Lions lose their tenth game of the season while openly trashing the Biden administration as communists.  All the kids, who are home-schooled and regular church-goers, played merrily throughout the house.  My wife discussed shotguns, rifles, and armaments with my nephew, while suggesting that we try out our new Israeli pistol on the 400-foot firing range in his backyard.  He followed up by proudly showing us a video of his 13-year-old son deftly handling a semi-automatic rifle on that range.  I enjoyed a look at the quiet rural scenery with the mother-in-law and her daughter while they were taking a smoking break out by the chicken coup.  A good time was had by all!

Are you sure about that? When we visited campus for Elder’s college tour (before deciding on Hillsdale), I think there was one co-ed dorm (by floor?). And we were introduced to the leaders of the student groups, including the LGBT “club.”

When I told the parent liaison at Hillsdale that Notre Dame and the University of Chicago were in her top three choices, she said, “thank God she didn’t choose either of those!!” And she meant it. There is no human institution safe from corruption by the Left.

I graduated from Oberlin in 1980, BA with a major in geology. It was good enough to land me a 33-year long career with Exxon.

My freshman year, there were 15 guys on the football team. The rugby club got more fans because they would pitch in and buy a keg of beer to entice people to come to the games.

But we still hold onto the butt-whipping of OSU.

I played on the tennis team for 4 years and remember beating Dennison in my matches.

Oberlin was crazy liberal back then – I’m not sure how to describe it today. Maybe just crazy.

Two touchdowns within 26 seconds to win the game.  My beloved NC State Wolfpack beat the North Carolina Tar Holes in a thiller in Raleigh, the second touchdown coming with 1:09 left to go.  Carolina went up 30-21 with 2:12 left to play when the Wolfpack reached waaaaaay up their rears and pulled off the stunner.

If Wake Forest loses to Boston College today, we will have backed into the Atlantic Division title and ACC Championship game against Pitt.  I’ll be glued to the TV . . .

That was an entertaining game. My whoops and laughs brought my husband running to see what he was missing the last few minutes. I understand those last 2 minutes cost our arch rival a chance to play for the conference title.

As long as we’re bragging, my alma mater, Carnegie Mellon University (Carnegie Tech on that auspicious day) beat Knute Rockne’s undefeated Notre Dame Fighting Irish 19-0 on Nov. 28, 1926 in front of a standing room only crowd at Forbes Field. So stunning was our victory, ESPN still includes it as one of their top 10 upsets in college football history. We’re also pretty good at a few other things besides sports.
