At the North Carolina State Fair
We went to the North Carolina State Fair on Sunday. This is something we do every year, and I’ve always seen it as the official beginning of fall. Last year’s fair was canceled, so this was a welcome return to the tradition. I was delighted that the weather turned cooler just in time for our visit, so it actually felt like fall.
Attendance was down a bit, so it wasn’t terribly crowded, but it certainly wasn’t a ghost town.
As you can see from the pictures, I’d say only about 10-20 percent of the attendees were wearing masks. (Of course, you do spend a lot of time at the Fair eating things.) Either way, nobody seemed too worried about it.

I couldn’t bear to look at the photos… no one appeared to be masked! (I live in Oregon.)
I think I see a mask. Probably a Duke student.
I’m working a a Renaissance Festival in Texas. Less than 3 % masked, maybe more like 1%. Attendance about 20,000 per day great for opening weekend that was very hot.
Earlier this summer in upstate New York a smaller festival – same thing. Reports of all festivals around the country is attendance way up and people are spending.
My daughter lives in Durham, & went to the NC State Fair last week. I didn’t get pictures of the crowd. I got pictures of the fried Oreos, the donut sundae, etc…
My wife and I went to the Erie County (NY) Fair in August and it was well attended and I don’t think even 10% of people were wearing masks.
I grew up a short bicycle ride from those fairgrounds, in the shadow of what used to be known as Rich Stadium. My Mom and both siblings still reside in the area. I always declare: “Buffalo, a great place to be from!”
(and I’m glad I no longer live there) Disappointing outcome last night in the game…
I went to the Columbus Zoo on Saturday. Maybe 20 percent were masked. I did see a lot of rainbows, though — rainbow-unicorn Halloween costumes (one worn by a bearded, man-bunned hipster), rainbow T-shirts, rainbow handbags, rainbow this, rainbow that. I’m not sure what to make of it.
I remember one year they had the State Fair, an NC State home football game, and (IIRC) a President Jimmy Carter visit all on the same Saturday. It was a cluster_ . . .
I blame THE Ohio State University.
This year we had the Carolina Hurricanes season opener during the Fair. All the hockey fans who usually park in the Fair parking lots (to avoid the charge at PNC Arena) were forced to reroute. Added to the Charlie-Foxtrot atmosphere.
Why were They putting masks on animals?
They’re already in cages!
I am hoping if the society normalizes a bit, maybe I will attend your state fair next year.
Our local county fair and our Calif state fair are always in the pitch of mid summer high temps of 98 to 102 degrees. I can only run to the mailbox and back in that weather.
And I love a good state fair.
Isn’t your specialty congestive heart failure?
Diabetes & atherosclerosis.
So my daughter was doing research for me…
My wife and I talked our daughter and her boyfriend (Canadian) into going to the Knox County fair. The worst we did was have some funnel cake.
There is nothing more distressing than seeing a bunch of normals defying the guidance of their betters. Worse, it is going to be yet another never-happened superspreader event which will further undermine The Science and the rightful authority of the pro-science elite.
My wife went to THE Colorado College.
What is it with this “The” garbage?
Oh yeah, there’s THE Pennsylvania State University . . .
I wasn’t aware this had spread beyond OSU. Perhaps I’ve only met those from that school who are pretentious enough to use it.
Well, I went to THE Davidson College. So there.
I’m baffled that an otherwise excellent school feels the need to put an article in front of its name. The “THE” thing is overcompensating.
Actually, I didn’t think much about it when I was there. We just felt superior.
This was obviously with good reason for the future inventor of Saturday Night Classics.
Your sarcasm is noted.
This is the usual issue with typed words on the internet. No sarcasm was intended. Your noble service with Saturday Night Classics should not be understated, and I mean that.
