So Far, So Good

I don’t write in a journal.  If I did, this morning’s entry would be something like this.

I joined this thing called Ricochet yesterday.  Seemed like a good idea at the time.  Ordinarily wouldn’t pay for such, but had the thought that if there were indeed things worth reading, they could be worth paying to read.  After all, I pay to read books.  And as a general rule, you get what you pay for.

The first thing I read was a post about dogs in the military and it was a good post, so it was a good start.  The post conveyed the idea that a dog may be considered more valuable than a human, considering the training and all that goes into having one good service dog and the difficulty in replacing them.  The thought occurs to me this morning, the average dog may well be worth more than the average adult human, without the training.

There was a post of someone who was leaving; giving up the online social world, which is certainly understandable and perhaps even commendable.   I’d like to get away from computers and smartphones.  Though without spell check, I wouldn’t have been able to determine so easily if it was smartphones or smartphones, so that is handy.   It’s easy to let the tech doggie tail wag the human who uses it.  I spent too much time on Ricochet yesterday.  But maybe not.  After all, it was my day to do with as I please and I was reading things that prompted me to read other things and learn things.  Gaining knowledge is a hard pastime to beat.

I fell asleep last night thinking about The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America.  I woke up this morning thinking about the same.  I wonder if we had kept the name as the united States of America, that maybe the average person would have a better grasp of where the bulk of the authority is supposed to rest.

I read several other posts.  Weird or a better word may be strange or we can go with unique, is that these folks seem to think about things before they type them out.

Side note for those reading this one-time journal entry is I use social media for business purposes and often check it as a distraction from other tasks, like a break at the water cooler, to see what is happening and often am disappointed, if not disillusioned.  Less time spent on social media yesterday which was a plus and I think I may have actually slept better than average.

So far, so good.

I’ve been around since 2012.  Ricochet is sometimes infuriating, sometimes amusing, sometimes just entertaining, but pretty much always interesting.

That got a chuckle out of Me. Well played.

Welcome. Your short post is the first thing I read today and at least half a dozen thoughts(ideas or recurring themes) were actuated. This is why I like Ricochet although sometimes the thoughts are not pleasant but realistic most of the time.

Welcome. This place strives to maintain some civility in the whirling hate=tornado of social media. That effort is worthy of support although it is never going to be perfect.

Some of us ancient types (my daughter calls me “the geek geezer”) remember CompuServe Forums, where you paid to be there, someone owned it, and it was their responsibility to make the place worth what it cost you. For about 8 years I was a full time CompuServe Sysop, until the AOL buyout changed the business model; I started a Forum for model hobbyists in 1984 and wound up taking over the Space Flight and Comics/Animation areas. I always looked at my job as being a bartender: keep the place friendly, and stop anything ugly before the furniture gets busted up.

Our Forums had members who were talented writers, professional and otherwise, whose posts and articles were well-read and discussed. Ricochet is blessed with such as well. You’ll find them. Join in. This is as safe a place to express yourself as you’re going to find on the Internet.

I used an 80286 at work and scrounged an 8088, I think it was before buying my first 386sx.  Somewhere in the mix was a 1200 baud modem, but there wasn’t much activity that I member or new about.  I’ve participated in several forums over the years and have concluded that the forum platform is more conducive to useful exchanges than social media.

Appreciate the offer.  I actually posted my current book reads in my profile, partly as I didn’t have much other thoughts for the profile.  I think for now, I’ll let the feeds discover the things I may not know I’d be interested in and maybe do some exploring when I have more time.

It may have been more desperation.  Social media can leave one starving for intelligent conversation.

Always more to find and explore, of course. But if you fall into the PIT, you’ll never get back out.

If I remember correctly, my CompuServe handle was 104035,1415. Back before they let you use an actual name. I was thrilled when I found an offline forum reader, so I didn’t have to stay online tying up the phone line.

Mine had 7’s and 4’s and 6’s, I think. But it was fewer digits.
