A Marriage Declaration

 

I got married a few weeks ago and I thought I’d share the declaration that my wife and I gave in front of family and friends. We took inspiration from numerous sources, and I’m not ashamed to admit the closing line was lifted from one of the most important documents in human history.

We collaborated on this declaration and we hope this inspires you if you’re writing vows of your own or if you know anyone who’s getting married.

Together, we declare:

We are embarking on this adventure as copilots, best friends, lovers, and equals.

The strength of our union is derived from our consent as two individuals who have chosen to come together in the pursuit of a shared life.

We will help each other grow to be the best possible versions of ourselves, supporting each others’ goals, desires, wishes and dreams wholeheartedly.

We will encourage each other to take risks and be gracious with ourselves and each other when we make mistakes, because this is how we learn best.

We will demonstrate respect of each other’s opinions and seek to understand and learn.

We will protect and maintain the culture of appreciation we have built through continual expression of gratitude for all acts of kindness, physical affection and service, big and small.

We will strive to be honest and embrace vulnerability with each other at every opportunity, especially if it is difficult.

We will prioritize rituals of connection, whether it’s making coffee, kissing hello, goodbye and goodnight, or sharing a meal.

We will never stop trying to make each other laugh and endlessly exchanging Austin Powers quotes with each other. Yeah baby.

Simone-I will visit every aerospace museum on the planet with you, not out of obligation but because it delights me to see you happy & in your element.

John- And I will visit all of the art museums and kitschy destinations we find in our travels, because I love to see you explore the things that nourish your soul.

We understand that taking time to care for ourselves and each other can be a radical act in a society that prioritizes materialism and productivity at all costs.

Simone-I have known loss in my life but I have found a home in you, John.

We will create a space that we can always come home to, because home will be wherever we are together.

When the time comes to expand our family, we will raise responsible, inquisitive, and compassionate human beings.

And for the support of this marriage declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.

    What a beautiful sentiment!  Congratulations to you and your new wife.  Our current society doesn’t honor marriage, commitment, sacrifice, or some of the sentiments that you share. You and your wife are a testament to others, both married and still single, about what is right and good in this sacred institution.
