Joe Biden and the Smartass: Act One of a Long, Hot Summer for Democrats

A small businessman in Wisconsin tells Joe Biden to lower his taxes, and Joe Biden calls him a “smartass.”

You sort of know what Joe Biden means. You know where he’s coming from. He’s thinking, Hey, come on. I’m doing a nice thing here, I’m coming to your frozen custard shop and I’m being a nice guy. I don’t have to do this. I don’t have to mingle with you people. Especially if you’re going to be so rude.

My guess is, moments like this are going to happen a lot this summer, as congress heads back home for Fourth of July picnics and the August recess.

If it was true, that Biden was there for the benefit of the frozen custard shop, and not for his own benefit, then Biden might have a point, but if Joe doesn’t like being “on call” 24-hours per day, 7 days per week, he’s in the wrong business.

What is it with Democrats not being able to talk to people? First the town halls, then simple questions about where they stand, and now they can’t take a joke? Aren’t these supposed to be the ultimate career politicians, the ultimate “people’s” people?

Kinda makes you wonder if they aren’t “people” people and are really “out-for-themselves” people…

Wow, that’s pretty great watching Biden get “soft-served.” Yes, I just coined the phrase for this type of citizen/politician exchange. Maybe they’ll make a Tea Party soft-serve with vanilla, red and blue swirled custard. The question is, when will somebody “soft-serve” Obama? I must admit, living in the DC area, I’ve thought about what I’d do if Obama walked into a restaurant where my family and I were eating. He’d come over to the table, reach out his hand, and I say to my boys, “Boys, this is man who stole your future.” Okay, maybe not, but a girl can dream.

I fully expect their answer to this dilemma will be to avoid their own constituents as much as possible. If their performance last year in dodging town halls, or stacking them with supporters, is any indication this summer will be one of extreme “stealth”.

The last time a working man confronted a high ranking member of the Obama administration, the media instantly created an icon for the Republican party. So, get ready for the political stylings of Joe The Frozen Custard Man. Either that or we ‘re going to bear witness to a Frozen Custard Summit™ very shortly.

The interesting fact for me is that Biden lacks the courage of his convictions. Otherwise he would smile and tell the shop owner, “Everybody likes lower taxes, but I think you are paying your fair share”. A veep confident in his economic program would conclude by rhapsodizing about the Keynesian goodness — all those jobs saved or created — delivered to the shop owner at no charge, apart from the small matter of a trillion dollar unfunded increase in the federal budget.

Joe Biden has had a chip on his shoulder about his intelligence since Princeton turned him down 50 years ago. Just look at his reaction during Justice Alito’s confirmation hearings – the guy gets very prickly when he senses people think he’s not smart. Hence his reflexively snarky reaction to the ice cream man: the man asked Biden a question and Biden had no satisfying answer to it. The ice cream man may as well have tapped Biden’s knee with a rubber hammer.

The other thing is that the incident reveals just how humorless and just-plain-clueless Biden is. The owner made a completely appropriate, good-natured jest: “Cut my taxes and we’ll call it even.” That’s how real people talk. If Biden and his partner don’t get that, then they don’t get America.

The biggest problem for me is how do I make an animation that tops what this guy does……It is pretty bad when you can’t make a cartoon more silly than the real guy…
