Five Ways Toy Story 3 Is Not Like The Obama Administration

Every Monday, I post a culture column on my website, AndrewKlavan.com and then go on the Mike Gallagher show to chat about it. In all modesty, or in some modesty, I thought today’s column – titled as above – was worth linking to:

Toy Story 3 centers around an apparently lovable and benign leader who is really a corrupt bully – so okay, it’s like the Obama Administration there. But in the movie, even the Barbie doll understands that government derives its just powers from the consent of the governed…

The rest is here.

Can I add a sixth? Toy Story 3 made me want Toy Story 4, whereas Obama Administration 1 does not make me want Obama Administration 2.

Why do animated features seem to embrace conservative, or at least libertarian, ideas to a greater degree than the their non-animated cousins? Is it because Tom Hanks’ politics really don’t matter if he’s just mouthing some lines (and presumably obligated to do so)?

I mean, look at The Incredibles, with its emphasis on individualism against the homogenizing efforts of the state. Or even Cars, with its respect for tradition, loyalty, and personal responsibility — not to mention NASCAR demographic.

How do they do it? Are animators, and the people who write for them, a different breed? Or is it more a matter of what necessarily sells with kids who haven’t yet been corrupted by our system of higher education?

Just saw the movie. Fantastic. And great lessons drawn therefrom, Drew.

Alas Rob, the ending of TS3 made clear that there will not be a TS4. And perhaps that is a good thing.
