What Men Want
They want to be firefighters.

Ha Ha! Maybe Firemen are what women want?
Strong, brave, mechanically inclined, with an innate understanding of physics. And all men look handsome in turnout gear.
Firemen are aces-high with me. They pounded up the street with a gurney from the corner firehouse to deliver our daughter when Kaiser Hospital mistook her mother’s labor pains for some trifle. The umbilical cord was around our infant’s neck and they unwound it before damage was done. Those hearty men filled the bedroom with their bluff cheeriness. God bless ’em, every one.
Firefighters? Naw.

I never wanted to be one, no idea why, have friends who are and they are fine people, without a doubt, but it points out the silliness of the Prager article. One might as easily ask what fifty-something, suburban dad’s want…most want the best for their families and a few strokes off their handicap. I want to improve my spider guard and my sweeps, and I want to champion a conservatism that sees men, that is to say, people, as individuals and not members of groups.
Boys certainly want to be firemen.
Firemen, not firefighters
My brother received his calling at age five- during a ride on a fire truck. He passed on a transfer to USC at 22 and is now in his 23rd year with LAFD.
He tells me most firemen want to be stationed on the fireboats.
Personally, I want to be a cowboy.

My favorite fire fighting memory…my dad joined the local firehouse as a volunteer. The first time the alarm went off he made a big show of suiting up and hoofing it down our half-mile driveway in full gear (the firehouse was just outside our property). It was exciting!
It was also the Tuesday Noon fire alarm.
No, no, not at all–just noting how simple this question is compared to any question about what women want. Say something about what women want, everyone’s nose will get completely out of joint. Say that men want to be firemen? Everyone smiles, recognizes that this is basically so, says, “Firemen are cool,” and moves to the next thread.
As a kid, I wanted to be a military pilot, but my uncorrected eyesight wasn’t good enough. I guess they didn’t want you to die just because your glasses got knocked off.
What men want: A Good-Hearted Woman
As the Italian sandwich once said, I want to be a hero!

Now that’s honest right there.
Mighty fine genetic stock, J.C.
I understand Captain Aubrey’s sentiments at #4. Many years ago when I lived up in western Montana, it seemed that nearly every guy wanted to be a smokejumper: a fireman who is parachuted into remote areas of the countryside to fight forest fires. The mass attraction to that job never made much sense to me, but then I’ve always been a somewhat contrarian, against-the-grain type.
Speaking on behalf of the loyal opposition, most men want a way to develop the physique and animal magnetism of a fireman, provided that the process takes no longer than half-time on Monday Night Football.
Hidden above the fray, the male cat watches the proceedings with increasing interest, flicks his tail, and waits for the next act to begin.
This is a Prager dig?
As demeaning as it sounds if you squint just right, Prager is exactly right, even if his remarks aren’t all-inclusive.
If he’s wrong, who’ll make the case that women don’t want to admire the men they love?
“If he’s wrong, who’ll make the case that women don’t want to admire the men they love?”
I don’t buy the distinction that Prager makes between the sexes in his article. Don’t men want to admire the women they love? And not just for their beauty, but for their good character, or selflessness, or accomplishments? I know there are loads of posters here who admire Prager, but I can’t stop myself from pointing out how chauvanistic his attitudes are. It’s exactly the attitude I faced in my high school where girls were not allowed to take drafting and computer science classes — these were reserved exclusively for boys. (I graduated in 1976.) He’s a dinosaur.
What men want: BACON!
Quite. My mistake.
Well, women want their men to be firemen. Point of pride: my nephew is the one standing in the cave. Why a fireman is standing in a cave with a pickax remains a mystery.
You’re welcome!
Honestly, in a very simple representation, I think you have captured a much larger truth. If it weren’t so late and I weren’t so tired I would leave my thoughts here. As it is, though, you have provided me perfect blog-fodder for my Sunday. Thanks for that.
I wanted to practice the occupation of the main character of whatever movie was popular at any given moment:
When Top Gun came out, I wanted to be a fighter pilot.
When Ghostbusters came out, I wanted to be a parapsychologist.
Etc…
