Us Marine Killed in ISIS Attack in Iraq

A US Marine was killed and several other American service members were wounded today by indirect fire from enemy forces near Makhmur in northern Iraq, ABC News reports:

ISIS forces fired two rockets onto a base where American troops are advising and training the Iraqi military, according to a U.S. official. Only one of the rockets is responsible for the damage and loss of life.

In a press release from Iraq, the U.S. military confirmed only that a coalition member had died as a result of “enemy action.” The Defense Department will not identify the individual until next of kin has been fully notified.

Damnit.

May God comfort his family.

“I want the American people to understand how this effort will be different from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It will not involve American combat troops fighting on foreign soil.”

-Obama in his plan to destroy the Islamic State

As true as any other statement the man has made.

    Dear Editors,

What is remarkable about this story? Why did you publish it here? I glanced at related threads but did not see how this tidbit served as a useful anecdote to those threads. I apologize if you know those who were casualties.

I realize Ricochet is a business and clicks are a coin of the realm. But when I see news in the opinion pages I wonder what news is omitted?

I’m sorry in advance to suggest tomfoolery, I suspect this has been going on a long time, perhaps weekends, more likely I just have not noticed and I just taking out my frustrations from another failed bracket.

If this was put forward in order to commemorate this nameless marine, to pray for his family yes in that I can see the purpose. The fallen must be remembered.

But I agree, this posting does not serve that purpose.

If history is any indication, these men will be the first of many to fall in a “Don’t worry, there’s no real risk” war. What we used to call low intensity conflict in the 80’s. Pretty intense for families when those bodies come home, though.

There’s no such thing as an airpower-only war.

Of course that’s why it was put forward. What other reason could there be?

Claire, I see that as a losing argument.  After all, these pages hardly commemorate every fallen Marine, nor any majority, nor even a plurality, and this is right and proper.  That is not the purpose of these pages, laudable though a purpose that is, and we would only make a hash of it.

I have thought that this Marine died in carrying out tasking which has been hotly debated here, with you and I on opposite sides, and debated at such length as to have come to a polite standstill.  I see this post as quite germane to the continued discussion among friends here at Ricochet, and an admission perhaps against interest to the side of those who support Mr. Obama’s “no boots on ground” strategy for doing the thing over there.  Yet it does not show you up as wrong, but as gracious.  Let no argument on this topic come between swearing and spitting and recognizing the sacrifice.

    I join you.

And may his country rain steel and fire upon his murderers and their ilk.

    But of course we won’t.

As the father of a Marine I appreciate any recognition of their sacrifice and the sacrifice of their families.
