Once More Unto the Breach for Scott Brown

Last week, Alabama Senator and — according to some of us — conscience of the U.S. Senate, Jeff Sessions, said this in an open letter to the American people:

You have the power to send a bolt of lightning that will send shock waves through Washington DC. You have the power to tell Obama and his open borders extremists: NO. At this moment in history – at this grave hour – the single most effective thing you can do to stop Obama’s executive amnesty is to help elect Scott Brown.

I am inclined to say that this is stirring stuff. But everything that Sessions says or writes seems to be stirring stuff.

Yesterday, Mickey Kaus penned a column called “The Kausfiles Midterm Rooting Scorecard.” Kaus (if you don’t read him … look, you’re just missing a lot!) begins by asking the all-important question (and answering it): “what does Kausfiles want? It’s complicated!” He goes on to say:

[Answering that question is] not always as easy as it sounds, especially if you are a blogger whose major issue (control of our borders to help create a tight labor market) does not break down cleanly along party lines.

In other words, he (we) wants Republican control of the Senate. But he (we) wants to punish anyone who has supported the “Gang of 8” proposal … aka Comprehensive Immigration Reform … aka Amnesty for Illegal Aliens. Kaus’ conclusions are numerous (need I say: read it all?), but here is what he leads off with:

There are two Republicans in GOP-pickup states whose victory would dramatically boost the anti-amnesty cause:

Arkansas, where Tom Cotton has made immigration a consistent attack theme against Mark Pryor, who (like every Senate Dem) voted for the Gang of 8. Cotton explicitly makes the argument that low-skilled immigration lowers wages. “It is basically supply and demand.”

New Hampshire, where incumbent Democrat Jeanne Shaheen is under similar early-and-often anti-amnesty attack from Scott Brown. Shaheen is a popular ex-governor with a sensible, moderate image. Brown doesn’t have quite as strong a record on immigration as you might expect, plus he’s a carpetbagger and a relative longshot — compared to, say, Cotton. It doesn’t matter. If a popular ex-governor with a moderate image can get beaten by a longshot carpetbagger because she voted for “comprehensive” reform, that sends an even clearer message about the toxicity of “comprehensive” reform, doesn’t it? I just sent a contribution to Brown, which you can do here.

The bold face is Mickey’s (I don’t shout nearly so much).

So, leaving aside Tom Cotton (who will do just fine thank you very much), let me examine how Scott Brown is doing right about now.

Well, two polls came out yesterday; one showing the race even and one (by WMUR/UNH) showing Brown behind by eight points!

My first inclination upon hearing of this latter poll was to go out and shoot the messenger. Who is this Communist WMUR/UNH outfit?!? Why have they got it in for Scott?

But of course, while no one denies the temporary relief you get by killing Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, the problem is that relief tends to be, er, temporary.

What’s more that same pinko polling firm recently found (also in NH) that conservative Republican Congressional candidate Maralinda Garcia was four points ahead of Comrade Annie Kuster, when nearly every other poll has Kuster in the lead by double digits.

Maybe they (i.e. WMUR/UNH) are just incompetent? Maybe they have some Rasputin in the back room who has seen all that we cannot see.

But I begin to sense the impatience. I can hear you, you insightful, get-to-the-point-already Ricochetti, saying: “Look Stopa, if we’d wanted equivocation we would have found us a Jesuit. Tell us who’s going to win already, huh? I mean huh?!”

Alas, Gentle Reader, I haven’t a clue. All I know is that I am heading north to New Hampshire this weekend. If Scott Brown can be counted on (and he can) to leave it all out on the court, then a weekend of my time (and what few guilders I can spare) is the least I can offer to the holy cause.

Know anyone in New Hampshire? Any Ricochetti planning to be there? Drop me a line and we can wave the Ricochet banner over a beer! (We *do* have a flag at Ricochet, don’t we?).

Re the WMUR polling, I go with incompetent.

After all, they’re affiliated with an educational institution whose acronym reads like a troglodyte’s grunt.

I donated to Scott Brown’s campaign the last time he won.  I just did again.  May the force be with him.
