Uncommon Knowledge: Thomas Sowell
Hoover Institution fellow Thomas Sowell discusses poverty around the world and in the United States. Poverty in America, he says, compared to the rest of the world, is not severe. Many poor people in poverty in the United States have one or two cars, central heating, and cell phones. The real problem for the poor is the destruction of the family, which Sowell argues dramatically increased once welfare policies were introduced in the 1960s.

To the point of poverty being more normal than wealth and our luck of living at this time in this place: Americans are about 4.3% of today’s world population, 320 million out of 7.4 billion. But an American living today is among the luckiest group of all the 108 billion human beings who have ever lived. So we are in the 0.3% luckiest who have ever lived. And those among us who are in the “top 10%” could be considered the luckiest 0.03% who ever lived, as far as material comfort goes. Granted that is not everything.
A better term would be “blessed”. By whom? God. Why? Because He chooses to. Why? Because He is sovereign, and has chosen it so, and His word defines the condition of our souls that maintain this prosperity. How can this continue? By our maintaining a faithfulness towards Him.
Will it remain so? Doubtful.
Peter; many thanks for bringing Dr. Sowell back to us. We have so missed the refreshing waters of his stream of genius.

I liberals had put half the effort they have spent trying to pretend that Thomas Sowell is invisible into constructive social policies instead, the poverty rate would be 75% lower.
