Trump in Mexico City
Donald Trump just wrapped up a joint appearance with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto in which the two men delivered speeches and answered a handful of questions. Trump read his statement in a quiet, measured manner, striking a conciliatory tone. Referring to his private meeting with Peña Nieto, he said, “We recognize and respect the right of either country to build a physical barrier or wall.” However, he added that the two men “didn’t discuss payment of the wall.”
The GOP nominee shed his talk of leaving NAFTA and suggested instead that the two nations work to improve the trade agreement. “A strong, prosperous, and vibrant Mexico is in the best interest of the United States,” Trump said. “Both of our countries will work together for mutual good and most importantly for the mutual good of our people.” He also stressed the importance of keeping manufacturing jobs in the “Northern Hemisphere,” rather than in the US exclusively.
For his part, Peña Nieto said that the closed-door meeting was “open and constructive” and added, “even though we may not agree on everything, I trust that together we’ll be able to find better prosperity.” However, he asked his northern neighbor to stop the flow of guns and illicit money into Mexico, as it fuels the nation’s violent drug cartels.
Later on Wednesday, Trump will deliver his much anticipated immigration speech in Phoenix.

I’m surprised they let him in. If we promise not to make them pay for the wall, you think maybe they’d be willing to keep him?
3. Kept the Wall, much to the dismay of those hoping for a flip-flop.
I didn’t get into evaluating the speech, because to do that I need to see Trump’s immigration speech tonight in Phoenix. I think that the two will work as a set-piece, and that Roger Ailes has written them accordingly.
Considering how contrite Trump was in Mexico City, if he goes full-showman in Phoenix (“The wall just got 10 feet higher and Mexico’s paying to gold plate it!”), then it will make his earlier performance look servile and pathetic.
For that reason, I think he’ll be very measured tonight.
Correct me if I’m wrong here, but China is also part of the Northern Hemisphere, is it not?
I heard the address they made this afternoon. Trump was a toned down version of himself, he sounded some how off to me. Sort of like how people sound when you have to say how much you like someone you don’t really like…or maybe he was just tiered. The Mexican president sounded pretty good, I liked that he gave a big rhetorical boost to free trade, by saying trade is not a zero sum game.
I’m curious to see what Trump will do in Arizona, because this Mexico talk is clearly a set up for that. So is this then going to be a Good Cop, Bad Cop thing where he plays nice in Mexico, but unleashes the rage in Arizona. Or is this sort of a boiling the frog scenario where he is slowly ramping up the heat on a substantial immigration reversal?
Really most of the populated world is in the Northern Hemisphere.
Darn Australians, stealing all our jobs!
4. Drove the left and the NeverTrumpers nuts, as expected.
Who looks more presidential today?
The guy who just had a joint press conference with the President of Mexico?
Or the woman who is in hiding, and denounced Trump for meeting with the President of Mexico, possibly from a hospital bed?
I think it’s the orange-haired reality TV star, not the lying criminal.
Yeah, I was a bit confused by that. Is there such a thing as the Northwestern Semisphere?
He’s going to be measured. He’s in it to win it regardless of whatever people think including hard line immigration folks and the various NT factions.
The usual swing to the center is for him quite a leap from his supporters expectations. His being measured is going to eventually force Hillary from her lair and we shall see if a few scales on the underbelly are missing.
I personally just want Her out of my life so I don’t need to go Galt over her nationalized health care plans.
The spinning from both the left and the NeverTrumpers is pretty bad today. Matt Walsh sounds more like an MSNBC talking head right now than actual MSNBC talking heads.
Basically, when someone said “That was a good speech and a great moment for him”, in came the “No it wasn’t! No it wasn’t!” chorus from the usual suspects. I think we’ve gotten to the point where if Donald Trump cured cancer, they’d try to spin it.
As one of America’s strongest allies and the only country to fight along side you in every war since WW1 – Australia says “Thanks for nothing, Donald.”
We all thought he was a nationalist, turns out he’s a hemispherist.
At least it appears Trump is seriously attempting to do the “Acting Presidential” thing now.
If he can fake it for a little over two more months, maybe he can make enough voters NOT think about the fact that we’re actually voting for Donald Effing Trump when we go to pull the (R) lever on November 8th.
I just listened to the speech: Did someone shoot him with a tranq dart?
Trump. So low energy. Sad.
That’s good to hear. For much of the campaign Trump sounded like he believed that any prosperity Mexico had achieved has come at the cost of American prosperity, and we needed to take it back from them. Is he learning that trade is not a zero sum game?
5. Seized an opportunity while HRC napped.
How about we make a deal. We build a big wall that stops people and drugs going north and guns and drug money heading south.
He took a yuuuge risk and it paid off. He looked good, the Pro-Hillary Conservatives are stuttering and nit picking and the polling continues to move the right way.
All in all a bad day so far for the Media-Elitist complex.
Hillary looked nasty by comparison. Your candidate may not make it folks. America may yet be saved.
His middle initial is “J”.
Yes, this would be an excellent opportunity to revive the Fast and Furious scandal.
Jeffing?
Let’s face it, he looked Presidential today. I think even the Never Trumpers would agree to that.

Solid Jamie. You actually listened to the news conference AFTER you commented with disdain. Hillary loves you, she sends XXX’s.
