The Pivot

shutterstock_390546703It looks to me that Trump will now turn on the naysayers in the party. It couldn’t be more deserved. He tried to play nice, but they are refusing to support him. After the 50 national security neo-cons penned a letter denouncing him, and other GOP stalwarts are playing games trying to undermine him, Trump will now use them to differentiate himself from failed Republican policies and attract a new coalition of voters.

From yesterday’s speech:

When we talk about the insider, who are we talking about? It’s the comfortable politicians looking out for their own interests. It’s the lobbyists who know how to insert that perfect loophole into every bill. It’s the financial industry that knows how to regulate their competition out of existence. The insiders also include the media executives, anchors and journalists in Washington, Los Angeles, and New York City, who are part of the same failed status quo and want nothing to change.

Every day you pick up a newspaper, or turn on the nightly news, and you hear about some self-interest banker or some discredited Washington insider says they oppose our campaign. Or some encrusted old politician says they oppose our campaign. Or some big time lobbyist says they oppose our campaign.

I wear their opposition as a badge of honor. Because it means I am fighting for REAL change, not just partisan change. I am fighting – all of us across the country are fighting – for peaceful regime change in our own country. The media-donor-political complex that’s bled this country dry has to be replaced with a new government of, by and for the people.

The leadership class in Washington D.C., of which Hillary Clinton has been a member for thirty years, has abandoned the people of this country.

I am going to give the people their voice back.

Think about it. The people opposing our campaign are the same people who have left our border open and let innocent people suffer as a result.

The people opposing our campaign are the same people who have led us into one disastrous foreign war after another.

The people opposing our campaign are the same people who lied to us about one trade deal after another.

Aren’t you tired of a system that gets rich at your expense?

Aren’t you tired of big media, big businesses, and big donors rigging the system to keep your voice from being heard?

Are you ready for change?

Are you ready for leadership that puts you, the American people, first? That puts your country first? That puts your family first?

Fasten your seat-belts.

Sounds like the speech of a Loooseeer. I don’t see how this gets him any new votes, but it is a tantrum that makes him and his supporters feel good. (You know, the very thing they accuse #nevertrumpers of.) I oppose Trump because of his lack of character and because I believe he is a Dem in disguise, but what I really resent is his putting me on the side of Mike Murphy.

I’m not sure how this is a pivot. He’s been attacking Republicans pretty regularly. This might get him some new voters. Does he care about retaining the old ones?

Instead of “attack” why doesn’t he try “appeal”?

‘More flies with honey’ an’ all that.

Right? He is going to keep running his primary campaign against the evil “Republican Establishment”… Call me when he isn’t loosing PA by 10 points and isn’t under water in Florida and Ohio.

The world changed, and you missed it.  Trump isn’t running against the Republicans.  He’s running against the two-party benevolent society of back-scratchers.

I think it is a fine speech. Nobody doubts his ability to speak convincingly from a teleprompter.

What happens when you take the training wheels off and he rides his bike off a cliff?

I know that many politicians don’t write their own speeches but this excerpt is so obviously not written by Trump it is actually quite comical to see him deliver it.

As to your wishful thinking, in my view the only question left is whether Hillary wins all 50 states.

Why would it be futile to try appeal instead of attack? Are you suggesting that maybe he did so much attacking that to “pivot” to appeal would fall on deaf ears? That the people he’s been regularly attacking have now hardened themselves against any appeal he might make?

I mean, if someone who constantly attacks and insults me suddenly starts trying to be my friend, I would be resistant, suspicious, or just plain shut them down. Because that’s human.

And humans are the ones with votes.

Didn’t a major Texas paper choose the Dem for the first time, just recently? Seriously doubt it by the way, given the percent of hispanics and his New York pedigree.

Funny how so many people can see the exact same things in such different ways…  based on our biases, or preferences, our priorities and values, whatever else.

Franco, our underlying disagreement about Trump is not the extent to which he is nice to others.  “Refusal” to support, likewise, is not based on whether he is willing to play nice.  It has a lot more to do with the basics; who and what the man is, and therefore, what he can and should represent.

For what it’s worth, though.  I think the speech that Klavan recently played clips of was actually very good.  Obviously, Peter didn’t write it… but I’ll bet he knows who did.  I say we get that person on Ricochet.

We are becoming Argentina, replacing one strong man with another. It seems odd to me that those who resent top down government have decided that the solution is more top down government. I’m not sure how Mr. Trump intends to bypass Congress to get things done, but I have seen how President Obama has tried to do it. One thing Mr. Trump should consider is that without a Republican majority in Congress he will be faced with endless vetoes and a House and Senate that will control the agenda.

As far as his speech is concerned platitudes and generalizations are not principles, and his management style is definitely top down. Unless your last name is Trump your advice seems to be discarded. His media failures are a shared responsibility. I know that Mr. Trump does not drink but Twitter seems to be his one vice and that is at least half of his media problem.

:)  I am past annoyance and on to full amusement at the way we all seem to be losing our heads over this.  People who only disagree with you a little, instead of a great deal, are fake republicans or traitors…  either candidate will send this country to hell … the republican party is dead, conservatism is dead, the republic itself is dead…

Somehow, I think we’ll all wake up one morning in 2018 or 2019 with the same old problems, very little having changed in either direction.  Back on Ricochet, we’ll be asking one another:  “which of us was the RINO, again?” and “when is this conspiracy finally going to play out?”

I saw some of this last night on Fox News.  I also heard another speech on radio yesterday in the car.  He’s making a whole lot of people nervous – they should be nervous.  I think the term “you’re fired” will be the most uttered statement ever if Trump wins.  While H was at a polling booth helping to sign up voters, Trump was in Milwaukee talking about how the failed inner cities are mostly run by Democrats and they have failed the African America community – under a black president no less.  He was addressing the people  saying I hear you while at the same time, in the same speech, he states that good policing saves lives – you think?? Here are two truths not being uttered by either H or O.  The debates are going to be over the top – like Mike R says…..full speed ahead!
