How about a Ricochet event this summer at the beautiful Saratoga track?  Racing begins on July 19 and goes through Labor Day.  Any interest?

Hello again-

I am organizing a Ricochet Member Meetup in Seattle on Thursday, May 23.  Venue is Daily Grill Restaurant at the Seattle Sheraton Hotel, where the seminar is being held.  They have ample seating, and we can get "private dining" for up to 40 if we get a big crowd.  They are open until 11PM, so if we set a 6PM start time, we should be able to get in enough conversation.  I will take on the responsibility of booking the room, and making name tags for everyone who says they'll be there, 5 days prior.  I'll use real names and "handles", or just handles, whatever each person prefers.  Hubby and I will be staying there that night, so we get whatever "hotel guest" privileges there are.  Y'all come!!!   [Ed.s, please move this announcement to Member Meetup Page]

Ed Apr. 23: Please, attendees, send me a private message with what you'd like on your name tag'

Daily Grill Restaurant

Inspired by the great city grills of yesteryear with intimate booths, private dining and fashionable bar, Daily Grill offers an All-American menu featuring dishes that are well prepared and reasonably priced. Highlights include chops and Certified Angus Beef steaks, fresh seafood, classic Cobb and Caesar salads, traditional-style entrees, homemade desserts, and one of the best martinis in town. Don't forget to visit the wine bar offering an extensive list of favorable wine selections.
Daily Grill Seattle occupies 7,000 square feet, with combined seating for more than 200 guests. Private Dining available for up to 40 guests. In addition to serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, the restaurant will prepare food for room service for hotel guests of the property and will also serve the hotel's Lobby Lounge. Carryout also available.

Yeah, not much lead time, I know, but anyone in Middle Tennessee interested in pulling together a Nashville meetup next week? I just realized we're coming up on spring break for the undergrads, so things should be quieter than usual. I'm thinking Tuesday or Wednesday night (March 5 or 6), at AJ's in Bellevue? Boscos or Blackstone as (slightly classier) alternate locations, other suggestions welcome.

As a lifelong member(ricochet.com's life that is), and the owner of a new restaurant in Annapolis, I was wondering if there is any interest in allowing me to host the next DC meetup?

Maybe we could even could coax Mr. Sajak to attend!

Obama appointees addressing Congress

2PM at Kilroy's! The last pre-Inauguration DC Ricochet gathering will provide the initiated the opportunity to contemplate in full session the significance of the last election and the slate of new Obama appointees headed to the Senate for confirmation. The notice is short but the urge is strong! And to show true American grit, we will eat at the same time!!!

Mollie Hemingway is confirmed, and, if the past is any indication, nice people, spirited conversation, a good time will be had by all. Kilroy's is just off the Beltway one exit west of the I95 merge in Northern Virginia and includes a wide range of family fare as well as adult beverages for those so inclined.

Kilroy's is at 5250 Port Royal Rd, Springfield, VA, 22151, near the scout store, a stone's throw outside the Beltway. (Although we have been officially cautioned about throwing stones across the Beltway.)

While you are at Kilroy's, take the opportunity to browse their impressive collection of patriotic memorabilia through WW II. Please RSVP below so we can arrange sufficient space. See you there!

Confirmed:

  • Mollie Hemingway, Ricochet editor, Mark Hemingway, writer for the Weekly Standard, and the lovely Hemingway daughters.
  • Sisyphus
  • Mr. & Mrs. GLDIII & Son
  • Reckless Endangerment
  • Basil Fawlty
  • David Foster
  • Lidens Cheng's aunt

I am looking to arrange a Meetup here in central Ohio for March or April at an area club.  No details yet as I am still exploring  costs, available dates, and rules.  But I would like to gage interest before I go any further.

Please see update Here

The place I have in mind has indoor rifle and pistol ranges, and an extensive outdoor trap range.  So, my questions here are:

  1. Who would be interested?
  2. What is your shooting preference (pistol, rifle, or shotgun)?

No firearms experience or ownership will be required, but some cost will probably be involved (splitting the fee to reserve the range, rental fees, ammo fees, eye and ear protection if you forget to bring any).  Depending on what we shoot, I can provide a few loaners.

The range I have in mind does allow you to bring your own firearms, targets, and ammo, though they reserve the right to inspect it or disallow it for safety reasons (e.g.. no steel-cased ammo allowed on indoor range, no using slugs on the trap field, no tracers, A/P, or black powder anywhere, no steel or explosive targets, etc.).

I figure that afterwards we can remove ourselves somewhere for dinner.

*Nota bene - the photo above does NOT depict where / what we would be shooting.  That's me renting a full-auto Glock at Knob Creek a few years ago.

Come one, come all, to the Dallas area meetup. Let's show the kind folks of Ricochet that everything is bigger in Texas, including meet-and-greets for right-of-center conversationalists.

When: Friday, January 18th at 6:00 pm
Where: TBA
Spurs, six-shooter optional.

Let me know if you can make it by leaving a comment.
Look forward to meeting y'all!

Sorry for the last-minuteness of this. Mrs. Of England and I are, apparently, going to be in Vancouver on Saturday 5th and Toronto from Tuesday to Saturday 12th. We would happily receive advice and would love to meet up with North Americans of monarchist and/ or Republican persuasion.

In honor of Faded Midget Rattlesnake coming to town, we're having a meet up at Chappell's Sports Bar.  This is a great (and affordable) Kansas City treasure stuffed to the rafters with cool sports memorabilia from the last thirty years.

We'll be there at 6:00 on Saturday, Dec. 29. Please comment or PM me so we can reserve a big enough table for everyone!

I know we have a few science types around here, any of you biologists going to be in San Francisco for the ASCB meeting this weekend? If so, we should try to find a quiet spot for a meet up, preferably sometime after the opening keynotes so we can digest Steven Chu's speech.

Heck, it doesn't have to be an exclusively science meetup, either. If any of the greater SF Ricochetti have a burning desire to wander down to somewhere relatively close to Moscone, I'm sure we could sneak away from the talks and posters for a couple of hours.

I know it's late to be planning something just a few days away, but I thought it worth at least floating the trial balloon.

We are getting together @ Bilbo Baggins in Old Town Alexandria around the 6 pm hour on Wednesday Dec 5th. I know it is short notice, but if any of the D.C contingent are up for a light dinner a few brews please chime in. Sisyphus, Charlotte, or the Hemmingway's any of the northern VA regulars?

NitWitMN and I are looking to meet with the Ricochetti somewhere in Minneapolis-St. Paul on an evening between December 3rd and 8th.  NitWitMN is local while I will be in town for Reserve courses.  I'd enjoy learning others' takes on the world situation and enjoy telling yarns about my experience as a conservative public schoolteacher enjoying Gov. Walker's post-WEAC Wisconsin. Please consider contacting us and perhaps we can convince Mr. Lileks or the Hinderaker-Ward Experience to add value to the gathering.  Cheers and let us know soon!

I have to travel this coming week (2-6 December) and I was wondering if any of the Ricochetti wanted to meet while I am in Omaha, NE (Sunday or Monday Evening) or D.C. (Tuesday or Wednesday evening).

I will open up my small 2 BR apartment in Brooklyn to as many as can fit, so long as you bring dessert and drink.

Let's set a date between now and New Year's Day.

Just throwing this out there. Team Hemingway will be in Central Oregon next week. Any interest in a meet-up of the Ricochetti? Are there any Ricochetti in Central Oregon? I'm sure you're all in Portlandia. But if any of you are near Bend or able to get there, what do you think?

UPDATE:

The Central Oregon meet-up will occur *this* Sunday between 2-4. Hope you can make it!

We'll be at Deschutes Brewery. Deschutes Brewery Bend Public House

Hello everyone, I was wondering if fellow members in the Southern California area (or those who happen to be in the area) are interested in a post-election Ricochet meetup? The proposed dates are November 10th or November 17th (both are Saturdays).  The venue is still in the works but I'm open to suggestions.   Let me know what date works best.

Once the date is agreed upon (I'll be posting updates) I'd also appreciate an RSVP to know the number of people attending to make sure the venue will accommodate our group.  :)

Several of us planning to attend the Uncommon Knowledge taping of Justice Scalia this Friday in Palo Alto have decided to hold an informal mini-Meetup (read: have a drink) immediately afterward.  Because of travel/time constraints, we will probably go somewhere at or within a few blocks of the hotel for an hour or two.

If any Ricochet members/contributors are also coming to the taping, or are in the Palo Alto area and want to meet some fellow travellers, please drop a line in the comments.   So far, myself, Don Tillmann and Trace Urdan are in, with unconfirmed rumors of a possible Yeti sighting as well.

Time: around 2:30 PM on Friday, October 19th

Place: At or near the Sheraton Palo Alto (El Camino Real/University Ave)

As it happens, I'm going to be in Charleston, SC on October 16th.

Anyone in the area want to get together for some cocktails and an in-person up-close debate watching party?

(After the first debate, it's impossible not to be looking forward to this, right?)

Let's keep it Member's Only.  Who's in?

Complimentary garage parking for our guests.

Its just down the street from the Donald E Stephens Convention Center. I picked this spot for the following reasons:

  • Its outside the city traffic.
  • Allows Ricochetti from far distances (i.e. Southern Wisconsin & NorthWest Indiana) an easy drive. and its not too far for you city dwellers Ricochetti.
  • At the crossroads of I-294 & I-90, (which allows reasonable connections to) : I-80, I-94, I-88, I-290, I-355 , I-57 & I-55.

Ricochet Members have been extended a special invitation by the Hoover Institution to join them in NYC for an evening of Cocktails & Conversation.  Hoover fellows, David Brady and Morris P. Fiorina, will discuss "The Road to the 2012 Election."  Hosted by Hoover Director John Raisian, this is sure to be a fun and informative event -- just the sort of gathering that Ricochetti would enjoy.  An RSVP is required and attendance is limited, so if you'd like to go, please respond to Marcy Mamiya (650.736.7459, mamiya@stanford.edu).

When: Wednesday, September 19th at 6:30 pm Eastern

Come One, Come All,

To the Chicagoland Fall MeetUp, it will be held at ~6:30ish at the Chicago Fire Oven restaurant (which is in the Crown Plaza Hotel) in Rosemont IL, across from the Donald E Stephens Convention Center. I picked this spot for the following reasons:

  • Walking distance from the CTA Blue Line Rosemont station.
  • Walking distance from the Metra's North Central Line Rosemont station, (fyi the NCS line doesn't run on weekends, that's why it needs to be on a Friday vs. a Saturday as originally talked about in May).
  • Its outside the city traffic.
  • Easy access from suburbs unlike May's Meetup in downtown Chicago
  • Allow members from far distances (i.e. Southern Wisconsin & NorthWest Indiana) an easy drive.
  • At the crossroads of I-294 & I-90, (which allows reasonable connections to) : I-80, I-94, I-88, I-290, I-355 , I-57 & I-55.

Any Ricochetti interested in meeting up in Indy?

How about next Tuesday or Wednesday, September 18 or 19?   Any opinions on location?  My suggestion is Bourbon Street Distillery @ Indiana & Vermont Avenues, but am open.

How do I post this to the 'Upcoming Meetups' section?

Lots of questions, I know!
