Poor Little Rich FLOTUS
Over the past few months, First Lady Michelle Obama has criss-crossed America to toast artists, congratulate students, and complain about her terrible, terrible life. Even though she resides in the top .001% of wealth, power, and celebrity, Mrs. Obama will never let us forget the pain of growing up in a middle-class, two-parent household and receiving one of the finest educations the world can offer.
Having thoroughly depressed the U.S. with her tales of personal woe, FLOTUS took her act abroad, getting feted by the rich and powerful in London. While touring Old Blighty, she visited the Mulberry School for Girls, which is located in a low-income, primarily Muslim neighborhood called Tower Hamlets. She inspired the student body the only way she knew how — grievance:
Now, I imagine that some of you might be wondering, well, why would the First Lady of the United States come here to Tower Hamlets? Why would she choose this community and this school when she could be anywhere in this city or in this entire country? And the answer is simple: I’m here because of you. I’m here because girls like you inspire me and impress me every single day…
And I’m here because when I look out at all of these young women, I see myself. I may come from a country that’s an ocean away, but — I’m a bit older than you all. (Laughter.) Yes, I am. I know I don’t look it. (Laughter.) But I’m just a little older. But in so many ways, your story is my story.
Let’s face it — all of our stories are her stories. The classic narcissist needs to lug around a mirror so he can gaze at his reflection. The Obamas are a superior breed who can look at any group of people and see only themselves.
Though she was talking to actual underprivileged students, Ms. Obama spent about half her speech complaining about her thoroughly normal upbringing:
For those of you who may not know much about my background, I grew up in a working-class neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago…
Her childhood home:
We lived in a really small apartment. And my brother and I shared a bedroom that was divided in half by a wooden partition, giving us each our own little, tiny rooms that fit just a twin bed and a small desk…
[B]ecause our apartment was so small, there wasn’t much privacy. I can remember how hard it was to concentrate on my homework because someone was always talking or watching TV right next to you.
Her family:
I remember just dreaming of having a space of my own, away from all the family obligations that were always popping up… So we constantly felt the struggle to balance our family responsibilities and the schoolwork, the activities, and the goals that we had for ourselves.

But despite my efforts, there were still people in my life who told me that I was setting my sights too high; that a girl like me couldn’t get into an elite university. (Editor’s note: Princeton’s student body was 37 percent female when Ms. Obama matriculated.)

And the fact that I was a girl and that I was black — well, that certainly didn’t help things, either. When I was growing up, there were very few black women at high levels in business, or politics, or science, on TV, so I didn’t have many professional role models to look up to.
Surely no one has suffered quite like Michelle Obama has suffered. But what she failed to mention is the rather different world she inhabits compared to the girls at the Mulberry School.
Before the speech, Poor Little Rich FLOTUS enjoyed tea with Prince Harry at Buckingham Palace and relaxed with the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street. After leaving Tower Hamlets, she (and her girls and their grandmother) jetted to Milan — at taxpayer expense, of course.
After meeting the Italian Prime Minister they viewed Leonardo Da Vinci’s Last Supper. Then Michelle Obama went to the James Beard American Restaurant with acclaimed chefs Mario Batali and John Besh as her daughters shopped their way through Milan’s fashion district. Next, the First Entourage flies off to Venice for the Biennale contemporary art show.
I don’t begrudge the Obamas taking a summer vacation, even if it’s more lavish than almost any other American family can afford. But would it kill her not to complain so much about it?

Condi Rice has a better story, yet we don’t hear her whining and moaning about how hard she had it. All we hear from her is what she has accomplished because of the opportunity in this country. That’s all I have to say.
Tower Hamlets has a history of election fraud, so it really is like home to Michelle.
I wasn’t aware that determining that you didn’t have a role model to look up to meant that you were somehow underpriveleged. Left out in the cold. How did she survive, then, with this vast emptiness of role modeling that now every American must have a right to?
Sad. Pathetic. Lame. Whiny. Kind of has a lot in common with this other woe-is-me crybaby:
She’s really got quite the life story to tell. Perhaps whoever wrote her husband’s memoirs could write hers.
This is what bugged the heck out of me during the 2012 election season. The main attack on Romney was “He’s RIIIICCCCCHHHH!”
Meanwhile the Obama’s are jetting to Martha’s Vineyard on taxpayer dime and I’m supposed to believe that they are in touch with the common man.
Once upon a time in America, kids dreamed of growing up to become the next Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, or Wilbur Wright. Today they dream of becoming victims. Even our first lady strives to become a victim. Downward mobility at its best.
Segregation was a horrific crime against people, and I’m not excusing it.
But human beings are creative and resilient, and many black families and individuals actually made out pretty well prior to the Civil Rights Act. It was not actually 100 percent total impoverishment. There was a middle class that grew up and managed quite well. They built great colleges and universities.
In fact, Martha’s Vineyard was an old mixed-race resort community.
Edgartown was the site of a “lyceum,” a community lecture hall that once hosted traveling abolitionists and philosophers like Henry David Thoreau.
Martha’s Vineyard was also important in the New England abolition movement.
I would never want to minimize the harm that was done to them as slaves and freedmen, but just once I wish the civil rights community would acknowledge and thank the “other side” for the sacrifices individuals made to end slavery and later to end segregation. Those sacrifices were way above the call of duty.
Yup. Adam Carolla has said something along the lines of, “It used to be that when a father and his son saw a guy driving in a rolls royce, the father would say, ‘Son, if you work really hard one day you can have a car like that too.’ Now when a father and sees a guy in a rolls royce he says, ‘Son, lets throw rocks at him.'”
Well, they are certainly in touch with our money.
There’s something mean and small about the first lady. She collects little hurts that the world has inflicted on her and holds them to her. She pets them and caresses them and takes them out for the world to see and admire her fortitude at withstanding them. What a sad, angry person she must be.
She is a graceless woman.
Instead of FLOTUS (First Lady Of The United States) FLATUS seems more appropriate (First Lady Attacking The United States).
Inescapable consequence of those high-fiber lunches she’s foisting off on the government school children of America.
She’s complaining about how HARD her life is – she flew there on a private jet and showed up to the event in a $3,000 Mary Katrantzou dress!

I know that I’m tempting a C of C violation using such a strong word, but I really do honestly hate this crybaby. Can’t even imagine how this relatively young couple will pollute the culture in future years. Discussion about whatever Mrs. O might have to say is beyond irrelevant.

@Johnny_Dubya_: @FLOTUS I don’t think my tax dollars should be spent on the president’s spouse’s globetrotting, and that applies to both political parties.
She doesn’t like to talk much about the saddest part of her life, when the University of Chicago hospital tripled her salary after her husband was elected to the US Senate, and then, when she resigned to become first lady, they eliminated her position.
What’s even worse about all this is she (and her henpecked husband) does these things because she really believes we want her to. She is wholly detached from reality.
Jon, thanks for the update on Michelle’s visit to the school in London. This lady has no class or grace. Her continual rants about how unfair American is and how unfairly she has been treated while she wallows in luxury at taxpayer expense on these globe-trotting trips are beyond the pale. The Washington Examiner has an article documenting Michelle’s expensive trip.
Italy on $100,000 a day! Heh.
Nowadays, a B or maybe even C student from Tower Hamlets has a better shot at an ivy league admission than a middle-class white A+ student from Cincinnati. FLOTUS should be giving a pep talk to middle-class wasps in the Midwest instead. They too can overcome the odds.
We need a FLOTUS to share tips on healthy living? First of all, she’s a nutritionist? A doctor? She’s worked in some kind of technical field? Done research?
I wish I could fly to Milan on a luxury airliner, pop out, say “Hey, eat right and exercise!”, then go shopping with the fabulous people. Not only does she do this, she openly flaunts it, like she’s doing the world favors by her mere presence.
Dignity. An attribute Moochele will never bother to look up in the dictionary, because she will never possess it.
Such a victim.
A gaudy print silk fabric, not even lined, not hand sewn, just an A Line skirt which is always cut on the bias, so what on earth makes that dress worth $3000?
Immediately before I clicked on this story, I was watching a video on YouTube for the Weird Al Yankovic song, “First World Problems.”
The coincidence was unsettling.
