Loved this show. Love the Hemingways in general.
I recently discovered a love of watching birds too, Mollie. I saw 71 species of birds on my recent trip to Ecuador. My favorite was this Crested Owl.
When we got back, I begged my husband to buy me a bird almanac of American birds.

Mark Hemmingway's comments on Obama's "You didn't build that" (actually you did build the bridges, etc.) were spot on. I hadn't thought of it that way before.

Always enjoy your podcasts. Now, I'm not a big bird person. I find them beautiful but they wake me up in the morning just when I'm getting my best sleep. Still, I was highly entertained and even sympathetic to the bird mania some people have when I watched the recent movie with Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson: The Big Year. If you love birds or suffer from knowing someone who does you should watch this film.

Nothing soothes the soul more than walking in the morning and listening to the birds sing--a free concert!
I whistle along with them and have gotten pretty good at imitating several species, including cardinals, whose song is among the easier to reproduce by whistling. The cardinal song supplies the dominant musical theme of many spring mornings in Houston. But the cardinals don't seem to like my whistling. Shortly after I start imitating one of them, it shuts up. Maybe it doesn't like the competition. (Cardinals mate for life.) The cardinal's easily recognizable call is an interesting one because you can discern elements of the song that seems to be common to all and elements that seems unique to the individual cardinal. Also it seems to me that the calls vary slightly from neighborhood to neighborhood:

I'm even fonder of you now, Molly, knowing you have become a fellow bird-nerd. This spring there was a mourning dove nest I'd been watching for a couple of weeks, when I finally drove by one day and saw the baby on the ground being attacked by a crow. I slammed on the brakes and honked my horn at the crow. My son was mortified...at ME. Mark may need to steel himself for this embarrassing eventuality. You never know what might set us off.
