This week, The Weekly Standard’s Bill Kristol provides an antidote to pessimism and charts the way forward. He talks about ObamaCare and the brighter lights in the Republican party. Then, Mona and Jay discuss Jon Stewart (who has a problem with ObamaCare), Saudi Arabia (which has had it with Obama), Iran (which is growing cockier), Alice Munro (who has won a Nobel prize), and other timely subjects. Finally, go Saxons! (A football team, with a name less controversial, but also stranger, than “Redskins.”)

I very much enjoy your podcasts. With the hoopla surrounding the use of the name Redskins, I’ve been thinking a lot lately of a team name for one of the teams in a boys baseball program I played in from age 8 to 15 in Arlington Heights, Illinois, from 1969 through 1976. The name was the Saxons. Then I heard Mona mention the name of her team.

I haven’t lived in Illinois since the late 1980s. I wonder whether PC has prompted that program to drop the name Saxons. Beyond that, when will Cleveland begin getting heat for the name Browns?

    Three Cheers for Mona!

Thanks Astonishing. Right back atcha! Re Saxons, I’m guessing its ok only because it isn’t “Anglo-Saxons.”

I watched this right after you mentioned it the last time, it is simply perfect. Thank you for the recommendation!

I really enjoy this podcast.  In the early days it suffered a bit from the two hosts being almost overly deferential to each other. (“No one knows more than you about this subject.” “Oh please, you are the smartest person I’ve ever known”, etc.) However, they have found a kind of rhythm and have been making very interesting and informative podcasts.

Mona has taken quite a bit of heat here over her views on the shutdown and she has responded graciously, I believe.  We are lucky to have her (and Jay) at Ricochet.

Thanks for bringing this to everyone’s attention. I looked it up on YouTube when you mentioned it last time; it is also there. It is truly worth the time. It’s so meaty that I intend to watch it again and to get everyone I know to watch it too. Here’s one genuinely grateful Ricochet member.

We don’t have to agree about everything, in fact it’s better if we don’t. Some people were a bit rougher on you than they should have been. I hope you realize they all still love you and Mr. Nordlinger. After all, they’re still listening, right?

I must disagree about being able to maintain high dudgeon for 50 years.  The left has managed to.
