Ricochet is the best place on the internet to discuss the issues of the day, either through commenting on posts or writing your own for our active and dynamic community in a fully moderated environment. In addition, the Ricochet Audio Network offers over 50 original podcasts with new episodes released every day.
It’s another action-packed edition of the Ricochet Podcast, as we’re joined by Texas governor Rick Perry and National Review columnist and author Kevin Williamson. The governor explains why he won’t accept federal heath care dollars, why the President has come to his state twice in the past month, and what the immigration issue looks like from the perspective of a border-state governor. Plus he personally invites Rob to don a ten gallon hat and shuffle off to Dallas!
Then Kevin Williamson stops by to talk about his new book The End Is Near and It’s Going To Be Awesome: How Going Broke Will Leave America Richer, Happier, and More Secure as well as his unique brand of theater etiquette. Also, the growing IRS scandal (Kevin has been doing some superlative writing and reporting on the topic). Finally, James describes what it’s like to live in the anti-Texas, and a primer on how to stop Obama at the mid-terms.

Just a technical question:
Why do you make the direct link to the MP3 file so difficult to find??
When you click on the Episode link it is not on the new page that you get. You have to right click to get a page with the direct link. Sometimes you even have to click on the link in the new page to get a THIRD page that has direct link to the MP3 file. (For example, that’s what you have to do with Episode 12 of Beltway Buzz). It took me a while and a lot of frustration to learn this trick.
Is there some conspiracy to try to hide this from those of us who like the direct link??
Allan,
The easier way to do this is to just click on the title of the show and then scroll down to the direct link. We’ll definitely make this easier to find in the next iteration of the site.
Clicking on the title of the show doesn’t work for me. I just get the podcast but it is not ‘down-loadable’. Maybe it depends on the browser?
Allan, Check your private messages.
Barack Obama’s gangster nickname should be Barry Pineapples.
I agree wholeheartedly with Peter Robinson about Berlin 1961. It’s a fantastic book, even if you’re a Cold War history buff. Even bought a copy of it for my friend to read, and he really enjoyed it too.
Speaking of which, since I’m looking forward to Peter’s book … What are his favorite Cold War books?
I used to ask my students why we call it The Cold War. Invariably the answer would come back as something like following: “Well, Russia is a really cold place, right?”
Two Texans…you guys know what you’re doing.
This may have the been the best Ricochet Podcast ever.
I think we may have one heck of a crowded field in 2016. I can think of 15 people of the top of my head that plausibly would run in that cycle. Good thing most of our “good guys” are young.

Rob Long first heard that he was the founder of Ricochet by reading Ricochet.
Is it too frickin hard to put the mp3 link at the top of the post, rather than have to stretch the box twice to get to the bottom?
Frickin’ fixed, Fynxbell.
Thanks for the more prominent MP3 link, Blue Yeti. It had been bothering me too.
Ronald Reagan’s 31 most YOLO moments
and yes, they are awesome
Blue Yeti,
Thanks much for the relocated link. Was just a minor annoyance after a day of multiple “minor” annoyances. In a 100 years, who will care?!?
I have two comments.
One, I really would have liked to hear Kevin asked to compare and contrast his book with Mark Steyn’s. They seem to have similar views on the medium term but have different views on how it will all end. I’d love to have them both on to debate this issue.
Two, I listened to this podcast while taking care of my 8 month old girl, Vida. She was named, in part, by the song Vida la Viva. And she has grown to like it so much that if she’s fussy (especially in the car), we can play the song and she’ll perk up and be happy again. Well, what a surprise to hear that song at the end. My little girl perked up and I’m sure now Ricochet has another fan!
Great podcast! Thank you for all that you do to have such a high quality show.
Reminds me of the student who said he couldn’t possibly know anything about WWII as he wasn’t alive the, and later, while reading from his textbook in class, read it as World War eleven.
Yes We are Lucky !
A showcase interview of Rick Perry , who distinguished himself. He was on Percocet a year ago
It’s funny to hear Rob Say he doesn’t have to worry about the IRS because he’s such an infamous squish:
Compared to Frum, Rob is like Goldwater. So keep your receipts, Rob.
Would it be tasteless to save that ending music and use it for theme music in the event Republicans miraculously manage not to mess up retaking the Senate?
Coldplay would never allow the party to use the song in any official capacity, but some enterprising Republican prankster should follow Obama around and play it out of boom box whenever he makes a public appearance.
Yes. That would be awesome! One day the president will be sweeping the streets he used to own. Well, at least I can dream.
