This week, on Need To Know, Bret Stephens (the foreign-affairs columnist of the Wall Street Journal and deputy editorial page editor) joins to discuss Susan Rice's withdrawal from consideration for Secretary of State. Then, a discussion of the left's views and behavior on the issue of human rights (spoiler: it's not what the media wants you to believe) and the stranger-than-fiction role that Jesse Jackson played in Susan Rice's handling of the crisis in Sierra Leone. Bret reveals his picks for the two greatest novels of the 20th century, the twisted priorities of Peter Arnett, and people who oppose freedom. Also, discussion of John Kerry--Secretary of State, Sean Penn's BFF Hugo Chavez, and insufficient grief. Finally, a look at the state of Michigan and why smoking is a line the left will not let you cross.

How I do adore you two! If misery loves company, you somehow give voice to my every discontent. Speaking of glum, it saddens me-it really embarrasses me-that Hugo Chavez and I share the same physical disease. He takes all the fun out of having cancer. But there's always a silver lining, and in the case of me and Hugo, our common illness inspires in me a determination to outlive him by at least one day. Is that mean? I'm going to start rereading Lord Jim right now. I never enjoyed it before because it was so dark, but maybe now it's just the medicine one needs. If tenacity counts for anything, we'll get through this.

I really appreciate Need to Know. Jay expresses perfectly the seriousness of the situation we find ourselves in when a majority of voters would re-elect Obama. Clarity and honesty about that is important.

And Mona's voice is warm and reassuring - she always finds a way to offer reasons to persevere.  I need that.
