This week on Need To Know, a special edition recorded at last weekend's National Review Institute Summit. Mona and Jay welcome Mark Steyn (aka "The Big Kahuna"), author Amity Schlaes (her new book is the must read bio Coolidge) and Ben Parker (aka Mona's son). You've probably never met a teenager quite like Ben before.

Note: apologies for the less than stellar audio quality on this show. It was hotel supplied audio equipment. Lesson learned.

Steyn's riff on "the fundamental things" and today's music was great. The guy's amazing for his ability to phrase things perfectly of the cuff.

Cutting Amity Shlaes off was a disappointment and a bit jarring.  Can we please drop the pretense of keeping the podcasts short for the sake of the listeners' patience? We are all junkies here, and crave for more of every podcast.  We don't care how long they are! It sounded like Ms. Shlaes was going to take the conversation in an interesting and compelling direction re: Thomas Jefferson.

Just riff and see where it takes us; we love every minute and don't need to truncate anything!

An enjoyable pod anyway, thanks...

Completely agree!

BTW, Amity Shlaes' name is misspelled in the podcast description.

Ben is every bits as impressive as he sounds on this podcast.  I had the privilege to meet him and talk with him on an NR cruise in 2011.  Easily one of my favorite parts of the cruise.

Yeah...ok.

Ben is 16, wow, very encouraging for the future of conservatism in this country.  Phenomenal job Mona!

Wonderful podcast with Stein and you and Jay.  Really enjoyed the nostalgic song too...they do not write lyrics anywhere near as tender today.

I heard you mention Downton Abbey too...thought you might get a kick out of this...since you are good with lemon meringue pie.

What is it about that show?  The manners, the days before income tax , the clothes, the scheming staff...its an escape from reality. Is it true Jullian Fellowes leans to the Conservative side?
