In their first post-convention podcast, The Washington Post's Jennifer Rubin and The Daily Caller's Mickey Kaus quickly get back in to the swing of things with a lively debate on the way the media is covering the campaigns in general and the polls specifically. Then, what are the political ramifications of the events in the Middle East? Did Romney's response make him look ineffective. Did the State Department embarrass the President? Listen to what Mickey and Jennifer say and then tell us what you think in the comments.

Re: On The Record
PLEASE! Can't someone in the Ricochet hierarchy advise Mickey and Jennifer (particularly Jennifer) to stop talking over each other. It is SOOO irritating. Let the other finish his/her thought before jumping in for heaven's sake. I really love this podcast but it would be so much more pleasant if this could change. Perhaps I'm the only one that this bugs but I'd be surprised. One more thing and then I'm done: you don't have to keep talking until you run out of breath.

We do. They can't help it.

Re: On The Record
Personally, I don't mind Jennifer cutting Mickey off. He's wrong so much of the time she's actually doing us a big favor. But Mickey needs to NOT cut Jennifer off. EVER.

Re: On The Record
Mikey stated, " Unsophisticated people who do not like seeing our flag burned " ? at the 35:00 point.
Not to pick Nits, but does that not matter anymore ?

Re: On The Record
This was the most obnoxious and infuriating podcast to listen to I've ever heard, over half of it is unintelligible because of the talking over of each other. I think you need to consider an MC/moderator a la Troy Senik in Law Talk. This was practically worthless to try and listen to.

Re: On The Record
They talk over one other because they talk across the country. Kaus leads the discussion in his halting Socratic fashion and Rubin responds. It sometimes is irritating.
I would allow them to work out the problems without interference.
No two commentators have better chemistry, or produce more creative sparks.
Two weeks is a long time to wait between podcasts, but they both work hard at their day jobs--at least Rubin does--outrageous daily production of posts, a mother, a wife. I almost imagine Kaus spending his off-time lounging on the California beaches, thinking big thoughts with his quite large brain--posting occasionally, and then lazing toward the microphone at the appointed time.
No, they work quite wonderfully, and I wouldn't mess with the chemistry even if they do cross-talk.

Re: On The Record
I found it revealing that Rubin gets in touch with the conservative base by watching Fox News for 30 minutes in the evening...

Thanks for the nice comments, J. And let me put your mind at ease: I can say with a high degree of certainty that Mickey does not spend his off hours lounging on the beach (even though as a fellow citizen of Venice, he lives less than a mile from one).

Re: On The Record
I am tired of all the talk of polls.
That is a matter of considerable importance for the campaigns, but why do they think the rest of us care. (Or maybe it's just me.)

Re: On The Record
What Obama no doubt meant to say is "Egypt is formally an ally, but certainly isn't acting like one." That would have been perfect, however you slice it.
Too bad the World's Greatest Orator didn't actually say that.

Re: On The Record
Mickey said "It's inconceivable that they wouldn't put a lot of money into Ohio." I do not think that word means what he thinks it means.

Re: On The Record
Thank you, Jennifer Rubin for being practical and realistic in spite of the sea of "Chicken Little's" saying that the Romney campaign can't win because of a few slanted polls in the middle of September.

Re: On The Record
I love this podcast. M&J are great. I do enjoy hearing Mickey's semi-left point of view. He's only once annoyed me.
I will echo other posters here, and agree that the "talking over each other" bit is annoying. Jennifer seems to be especially keen on not letting Mickey finish haha. Usually she's right (in my opinion) but boy, is it annoying.

I don't know if it's an Irish thing, but that's precisely why I love the podcast. It's the best feature, in my mind.

Re: On The Record
People getting heated and talking over each other, especially when one's going on for too long is one thing. Rubin is just walking all over Kaus so frequently and so rapidly that the listener can't understand either of them, making both of their discussion pointless. It doesn't really matter who's right or who's wrong or who's interrupting who when we can't tell what they're saying!
I've heard Kaus chat on several other audio/video discussion fora (e.g., Bloggingheads.tv). He's used to getting talked over and usually takes it like a champ, interestingly, but in this case he's getting talked over so much and so quickly that he's probably getting defensive and so interjecting when he can as well -- especially since he won't get a word in edgewise if he doesn't. (On numerous occasions, Rubin asks him a question, and doesn't let him get five words into his answer.)
I agree: They need to stop talking over each other. There's not much point in having a conversation if the listeners can't tell what they're saying.

I take it back. It really was extremely annoying in this particular podcast.

Re: On The Record
At one point in this podcast, Jennifer Rubin channels Polemarchus. Props for that. I also concur re:Romney's press conference and the possibility that Romney's electoral map might look a bit strange if he wins (assuming, for the moment, that the Rahe theory does not come to pass and the close-election theory holds)
On the down side, I also concur with posters re:the talking over one another. I applaud the passion and the chemistry, but, I'd rather hear what you both have to say than have to turn the volume down until the cross-talk subsides.
If I wanted a mostly incoherent shouting match, I'd turn on cable news.
