Ricochet is the best place on the internet to discuss the issues of the day, either through commenting on posts or writing your own for our active and dynamic community in a fully moderated environment. In addition, the Ricochet Audio Network offers over 50 original podcasts with new episodes released every day.
This week, we listen. We listen to Paul Rahe on the Middle East. We listen to Victor Davis Hanson discuss immigration, William Tecumseh Sherman, and his plans immediately following the podcast. Finally, some thoughts on a couple of recently departed cultural icons, meditate (but not mediate) on the rapprochement between the President and Mrs. Clinton (phew!), and on the troubling events in Ferguson, Missouri. Shhhh.
The opening sequence for the Ricochet Podcast was composed and produced by James Lileks.
Your 50 minutes is up, EJHill.

What I want to know is – What the heck does Rob see on the back of Hillary’s jacket?! …or is it backless?
That’s Vol. 5 Number XXXI.
The “kick me” sign left there by Valerie Jarrett.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
The Obama chair is backless. Hence, James’s obvious discomfort.
EJ, just how many faces of Ricochet podcasters do you keep at hand? Or have you constructed 3D models complete with animations?
Aaron – I have a couple precut for everybody. Uncommon Knowledge in HD is a beautiful thing. Lileks keeps promising me more.
Life is Short, But Rob is Long. :)
O Me! O Life! by Walt Whitman
Oh me! Oh life! of the questions of these recurring,
Of the endless trains of the faithless, of cities fill’d with the foolish,
Of myself forever reproaching myself, (for who more foolish than I, and who more faithless?)
Of eyes that vainly crave the light, of the objects mean, of the struggle ever renew’d,
Of the poor results of all, of the plodding and sordid crowds I see around me,
Of the empty and useless years of the rest, with the rest me intertwined,
The question, O me! so sad, recurring–What good amid these, O me, O life?
That you are here–that life exists and identity,
That the Powerful Play goes on and you may contribute a verse.
Yes! VDH! Always one of my faves.
But I also like when the boys palaver without a guest, GLoP-style.
A couple more iterations of Photoshop, and pressing “Play” on the podcast will – like watching an hour TV show – have the participants doing anything EJ chooses for them to be doing, synced to the soundtrack.
Loved the outro this week
Yes, Whiskey Sam, the outro…
I really don’t understand why a guy who seemingly made himself so big decided to end it all so small.
I guess that mental illness is like a burst appendix and too much of the irony is toxic.
I hadn’t heard of the Sykes-Picot until several days ago elsewhere on Ricochet. I went to Google Books as I often do when I hear of someone interesting who lived before 1923 (the first year of copyright), and discovered a book published in 1900 by Sykes about his travels in the Ottoman Empire.
I guess the new revelations about Williams’s Parkinson’s makes some of the speculation here, and elsewhere moot. My first thought when I heard about his asphyxiation was his movie World’s Greatest Dad, which I saw a few months ago. A very dark tragicomedy in which a character accidentally died that way, while doing a COC non-compliant activity.
For some time, I have tried to remember the person who has a voice that sounds like Lileks’s voice.
It finally occurred to me: Gary Owens–among other things, the news guy on Laugh In. I couldn’t find a decent videoclip, but here’s an interview.

Great show, guys! Please bring Paul and VDH back soon. Thanks to Rob for his insights on Robin Williams and for treating Lauren Bacall with the respect those who have passed deserve (even though she is a Lefty…not that there is anything wrong with that!)
Mentioning ‘ If this was a Republican’ must never ‘get old’ . Blatant press is a daily occurrence and to stop mentioning it because the perpetrators are tired of hearing us yelling about is to give in. They would love for us to shut up about it and accept it as normal.
Along the same lines, tsk, tsk, Peter is still reading the NY Times and expecting to get correct information. What is the definition of insanity again?
Owens was the original voice of Space Ghost and Blue Falcon on the old Hanna Barbera cartoons. Classic voice
Me too.
Another link to old Hollywood: Maureen O’Hara.
I like her, especially, because she was a good friend of John Wayne.
That podcast needed to be twice as long with those 2 guests. Left me wanting more. Unlike the image of a backless-dress-wearing Hill-airy.
Agreed, I really love it when Paul Rahe and VDH are on the podcast. I appreciated James Lileks’ question about the Ionian Sea, and listened to Dr. Hanson’s response a few times.
This was an especially enjoyable podcast for me, one I would play for someone as an example of right-wing stuff out there that I think is definitely worth checking out.
Yes, I cringed at this, too.
Peter — I realize you, too, come from the generation who didn’t know better than to believe what the papers printed, and it may well be “I haven’t read everything the New York Times has written about this” is a shorthand way of saying “I know I don’t have all the facts”, but please, please, consider the effect your choice of words might have upon the young people listening to the podcast. Imagine if you lead some such person to believe that reading the NYT was a legitimate way to inform themselves of the issues of the day. ‘The great Peter Robinson reads the Times,’ they reason, ‘I guess I should, too’. How could you live with yourself?
Peter — every word counts. Just Say No to the New York Times. Do it for the children. Do it for your soul.
Peter, I coming to this a little late, but regarding Redwood City and your adopted home town, you did know that Palo Alto has a SWAT team, right? Also Redwood City. I forget whether Atherton or Menlo Park has one. Anyway, not only does Redwood City have areas that might qualify as ‘blight’ ( or at least areas pasty white kids should stay out of after dark ), but their PD developed, like Palo Alto’s, to deploy into East Palo Alot.
Watch the opening of ‘Dangerous Minds’ again. It’s on YouTube I’m sure. That’s University Ave from Palo Alto to East Palo Alto. No riots there that I recall, but neighboring cities helped keep a lid on East Palo Alto ( across county lines in PA’s case ) when “EPA” fell apart. It’s better now, but there’s a precedent for the Redwood City police owning heavy equipment, whether MRAPS are justified or not.
