Aye. I noticed. I’d love to.
Problem is:
It’s in LA.
Too much for the man.
I couldn’t make it.
So I’m leaving
On that midnight train to Fredville
The NYC was awesome but rough. I went down and back the same day/night. LA is a too long a trip.
What I meant is that you should do more of them on the east coast.
EJ’s very best!
Speaking as a person who got married and had a child at 22 I can tell you that from my perspective (I wouldn’t wish my children away for the world either) I had NO. IDEA. WHAT. I. WAS. DOING.
Part of the reason that people should think about having children and getting married early is precisely for this reason: Otherwise they might wise up and decide that they don’t want anything to do with this at all. They begin living their lives and have no interest in adding the additional constraints of another human being (a spouse) AND these little clones of you who are entirely dependent upon you for everything from sustenance to butt-wiping.
There are a lot of risks involved in getting married early. If you screw up and marry the wrong person for the wrong reasons (because most people have NO. IDEA. WHO. THEY. ARE. when you’re 22) you will suffer consequences (financial and emotional) which are beyond your worst nightmares.
So there are tradeoffs – marriage and children early? Second life after they grow – your kids also won’t be spoiled because you’ll be broke when you’re young.
Woo-woo!
(Figured you needed a Pip or two.)
Yes live podcasts are awesome. That’s why you should do a lot more of them!

30 Rock did a really good Midnight Train to Georgia bit.
Jonah posted the art work on The Corner at NRO. I was accused of being a sick intern. Cancel your own damned subscription!
@EJHill Great artists must suffer for their work. @Fred We are doing a big live show at the end of this month. Please join us!
I need to add that I agree with Jonah about cats being Randians. I’ve thought the same thing for a long, long time.
If there was ever a creature that acted exclusively in its own rational self interest and eschewed altruism, it’s a cat.
Still listening, but do none of these three know the difference between correlation and causation? You’re not liberal because you like cats, but frequently people who like cats are liberal. It’s predictive without being causal.
Great, great discussion on having kids earlier. Mr. Podhoretz needs to write a book/article for Commentary on that.
We had our first when I was 26 (have four now at 33) and we definitely wish we had started a little earlier.

Well, no. They should, just once, do an event in flyoverland instead of this constant coastal domination.
Like NY/Washington and LA/SF are the only places in the country worthy of the glitterati who steer this ship.
I strongly suspect that the planning committee members are all wimps who can’t handle Winter.

Well, we’re doing a fabulous meetup on Mackinac Island, June 26-29, 2014!
We are discussing a joint meet-up with Powerline right in your hometown Dwayne. Rob, Peter, and I just won’t go there before the June thaw.

Thank you, Jonah, Rob, and John for the support of community colleges. When I was in grad school I killed myself trying to complete my doctorate to be a tenure track professor, because I thought that’s what I was supposed to do. I ended up making my career in community college teaching and I’m very happy now. I think we do great work, so thank you.
I haven’t listened to the whole podcast yet, but am I the only one who hasn’t seen the video of the vet returning from the war to an indifferent cat? Sounds hilarious. Link?
Thanks. I guess?
Thanks for giving community colleges and tradeschools their due. Perhaps some enterprising Republican politician should take up their cause in 2014 or 2016.
For my part (and relating to other topics discussed this week): No, I would not recommend that any child of mine go into the humanities in university education, either undergraduate or graduate right now, except perhaps in language departments where, if they are actually teaching language skills today, you get a skill set you can market somewhere other than Land Grant State.
RE: cats v. dogs. I’ve never understood the dichotomy. And I have had cats who followed me around like dogs and one who, as he was dying of liver cancer, painfully tried to pull himself off the couch to run and roll over in front of me when I came home as he had always done when he was healthy. What loyalty! Sadly, a week later we had to put him to sleep. As for dogs, I could say that they will bite the hand that feeds them and lick the hand that beats them, making them good leftists, but I have had dogs that I loved, too.

Blue, April is usually pretty safe….. but I don’t blame you for the caution and avoiding us right now. My nomination is still Danville, Ill as a sort of geographic center of the country, birthplace of Rob Petrie, and all the Ohio, Missouri, Minnesota types could get there.

…………….
My wife did her first half of college at community colleges, and she does very well professionally today. Both of our daughters did the first half of their undergrad studies at community colleges, and both ended up with their grad degrees without student loans, and teach at pretty solid schools today. I got my nursing diploma from a state tech college. In our family, we think that this is an excellent way to go.
One could say that you are sans regrets.
My goodness. I just listened to the podcast and almost put the car on the shoulder when I heard my name called out….. Guys I was being flippant. I almost feel bad that this throw away nub nub consumed around 10 minutes of “premium” GLoP time.
“It’s possible to not be able to stand it”
Luv you guys, but….What?
Quintessential TV star – Shatner is a good pick.
Maybe look up James Garner, Michael Landon, Heather Locklear, Robert Urich, Bill Cosby, Lee Majors, Betty White. They did ok too.
And, since Rob did not jump in, you might consider Ted Danson or Kelsey Grammer as something of a success on TV.
Wow. A couple things . . .
Nothing is more ironic than listening to 3 people offer their opinions for over an hour on a variety of subjects only for them to then complain that too many people want to be pundits and nobody wants to do any reporting. Hey fellas, I don’t remember you 3 doing any imbedded reporting in Iraq or Afghanistan back in 2003. But, we here could use some conservative reporting these days from, say, Russia, or Iran, or Libya, or North Korea. Any takers?
As for Sarah Palin–“a lot of us feel” she’s a disappointment? Who does, Mr. Podhoretz? A lot? How many?
Because I’m your average conservative out here and I think she’s a success. She’s done more for conservatives over the last 5 years than anyone. And despite her not knowing the Reagan Doctrine, she’ll still win a debate with any liberal. What more do you want?
The funny part? After Mr. Podhoretz criticizes Palin at length for being a disappointment and being seduced by her populism, he says, “I’m not even saying it’s a better or worse way to be.” Uh, how passive-aggressive is that?
