Lileks is off this this week, so it’s just Robinson and Long for our annual 4th of July Spectacular Show. And yes, we were supposed to have talk show host Mark Levin, but he had to cancel at the last minute. Not to worry — we’ve still got National Review’s Ramesh Ponnuru and our old friend Richard Epstein to guide us through all the Supreme Court decisions that came down this past week. Also, what’s that infernal typing noise and the proper use of the Oxford comma? Tune in and find out.
Music from this week’s’ episode:
America The Beautiful by Ray Charles
The opening sequence for the Ricochet Podcast was composed and produced by James Lileks.
Thanks, EJHill.

When a guest cancels at the last minute, do you still charge him?

Believe it or not the angle on the head was a perfect match for the original. I try not to stretch things too much.
That’s one of our primary revenue streams.
Mark was very apologetic and we are going to re-book him for a date in the very near future.

The last five minutes or so when Peter and Rob discussed the “totalitarian impulse” was the most poignant and powerful segment of any podcast I have heard in a long time. People need to hear that. They need to understand exactly what we are up against. I have thought about it as the lunatic left acting like trapped rats, but your discussion was far more to the point. Thank you. you were great!
PS: Rob’s dog got my three labradors up and barking.
Great pod guys, and three cheers to Blueyeti for his quick thinking and getting Richard Epstein to fill in. Although I would of like richard to take a breath every once in a while his insights are great. Thanks Yeti you are appreciated
Thanks. Rob really did get us both going there, didn’t he?
P.S. Three labradors? Careful. When the EPA hears, they’ll come up with a rule against that.
Thanks indeed to Blue Yeti, who thinks on his feet as well as anyone I’ve ever met–and thanks to Richard Epstein himself. There isn’t another academic of his standing anywhere in the country who would have joined us on the air on short notice just to help us out. Richard isn’t just one of the smartest men I’ve ever met. He’s one of the most irresistibly big-hearted.
I agree Peter, Richard was amazingly gracious to come on. I’m sure Yeti was super relived when he answered his phone and said yes, again we at ricochet appreciate the effort. Hope to hear Mark Levin on the pod soon, I’m a huge fan
I was looking forward to seeing whether Levin would interrupt Peter more than Murphy did.

Peter’s thoughts on the Totalitarian Impulse reminded me of this video
I was thinking the same thing. Reminded me a bit of this Scottish youtube guy Millenial Woes in his video Communism and Moral perversity. He’s quite good, check him out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-OfJIrKJ7c
This podcast did not suck.
Epstein is a joy to listen to. Law talk is unmissable. Rob should come to NY as well. Would like to hear his thoughts on the subtleties of NY vs LA living which he’s touched on before.
The Left isn’t willing to live and let live because of their fundamental nature: they genuinely believe that it’s possible to create a new reality by first imagining the world they’d prefer to live in, and then will that new reality into existence by changing how everyone thinks. To do that, it isn’t enough for them to change their own thinking, because the continued existence of the old way of thinking demonstrates that they haven’t actually changed reality. The new reality’s solidity is only confirmed by unanimity of assent. That really explains why Leftism has succumbed to the totalitarian impulse over and over again throughout history. It’s about to happen again.

This podcast did not suck
No, it didn’t. Not only that my name got mentioned. A pleasant surprise, if undeserved.
Peter,
apparently this is an actual survey Chase employes were required to fill out. I can’t verify the reliability of NTEB as a source, but if this is indeed true it underscores perfectly the point you were trying to make at the conclusion of the podcast.
So much for the totalitarian impulse:

I absolutely love Richard but often have to replay at least once just to make sure I understood everything he said (and even then I usually don’t get it all). Richard Epstein, our own Energizer Bunny. Just ask him a question and watch him go!
I always just want to hug Richard Epstein.
Rob should be careful about moving to NYC. According to every stand up comic I’ve listened to, NYC and LA are very different.
That being said, talk about an upgrade! Everything I have ever heard about LA makes it sound terrible. NYC on the other hand is the center of the universe.
Also, they mentioned Rob’s books. I have read both. They are awesome.
“we’re the kulaks…” (I nod as i listen)
That’s what we’re beginning to realize. Finally.
I order through amazon for my kindle. I can type “ricochet” somewhere so you get credit?
Peter, I thought it was curious that you said that the people who voted for McDaniel voted against their interests. This falls in with the same sort of view as was expressed in What’s Wrong with Kansas. Maybe the people who voted for McDaniel had their long term, rather than their short term interests in mind. It’s not clear to me that the kind of “bring home the bacon” politics practiced by Thad Cochran is in anyone’s long term interest.
Peter, re authoritarianism and requiring the signature on the confession, that’s something Ayn Rand touched on in her writings. What they are looking for is what Rand called “the sanction of the victim.”
Obeying was not enough, it was necessary for Winston Smith to love Big brother.
Excellent podcast gentlemen. Thanks to the planned and unplanned guests as well.
I know I need to listen to this a second time to pick up what I missed, but I do agree that last few minutes was exactly the somber type of discussion I like to hear here on occasion.
Fantastic podcast – I assumed the Rob was considering moving to NYC so that he could sleep later in the morning on podcast recording days…
Use the Amazon search box on the lower right sidebar. And thanks!
