Rob wants less fantasy in fantasy stories.  I want less drama in dramas and less comedy in comedies.

The sad truth is that the Clintons were so poor that Hillary slashed Bill’s hooker budget and staffed it with unpaid interns.

The talk about the giant scythe might be a pinch from The Long Ships (1964)
Sydney Poitier promised Rolfe that he would not be prepared to die so calmly… He shall give him an example of real courage that comes from authority, ‘his’ authority… Aly Mansuh asks Lady Aminah to select one of his guards to be the first to feel the ‘kiss of steel’ before the Viking…

Turns out the Mare of Steel is a 20ft high, 30ft long steel blade, which the guard is dropped onto. He slides down it, being cut neatly in two.

    It’s a real leg crosser.

The Fault in Our Stars might be a bit of a hat tip to Bette Davis and her troubled character in Now Voyager.. last line ..while smoking.. Charlotte Vale: Oh Jerry, don’t let’s ask for the moon. We have the stars.   Timeless.

John’s final words are ‘everybody have a good rest in June…’
Here’s Nilsson’s wonderful take on I like New York in June how about you from The Fisher King

And yes, Rob’s correct, Obama is dumb.

Rob wants less fantasy in fantasy stories. I want less drama in dramas and less comedy in comedies.

Rob basically said “stuff that isn’t real is annoying.”  You know what else isn’t real?  Bars where a gang of happy-go-lucky people hang out and are involved in each other’s lives.  Local bars are actually populated by drunken low-lifes, bikers and simian miscreants.  “Survivor” isn’t real.  “The Apprentice” isn’t real.  There isn’t a single thing on television that’s actually real, aside from (arguably) the murder porn shows on Investigation Discovery.

If Rob just wants to watch ruthless people victimizing the upright, moral and slightly less morally compromised he should just watch “House of Cards,” not “Game of Thrones”.

On the ‘We were broke’ line, I believe it was Peggy Nooonan who commented that the Clinton’s lie automatically, they lie even when the truth us perfectly acceptable.

My guess is that there really are thousands of small bars and restaurants around the country where “everyone knows your name.” Princesses with three flying fire-breathing dragons on permanent stand-by? Not so much.

Outside of the games themselves on sports broadcasts, nothing is real if someone KNOWS there’s a camera on them.

But the princesses and the Dragons are the point of the thing, aren’t they?  Otherwise, why waste your time going to this fantastic location where what we consider the normal rules of politics, physics and nature are suspended?  You might as well watch the “Pillars of the Earth” miniseries then – Dreadful, BTW.

EDIT: The underlying point that I’m trying to get at here is that Rob is saying “I hate the fantasy elements of this” which basically negates the whole thing, because the cutthroat, backstabbing element  of the whole enterprise is premised upon a world of unreality, where the normal rules are suspended.

And I hate Cersei Lannister.  She’s one of the most hateful characters imaginable.  Having read the books, I earnestly hope her head ends up alongside Ned Stark’s, which seems like justice.

“Local bars are actually populated by drunken low-lifes, bikers and simian miscreants.”

I’m not a biker, but I am having trouble deciding whether drunken low-life or simian miscreant is more accurately applied to me. I’d be okay with drunken miscreant, if that’s an acceptable compromise.

I could get into Sullivan and Son if there was no alcohol served at the bar.

Could do with less murder in procedural cop dramas too.

I don’t know when you last saw Cheers, but the only happy go lucky person was Woody, and coach before him.  The rest were morose.  Maybe Cliffy was happy go lucky.  “Well, uh, ya see der Gnomey, it’s a little known fact dat….”

And just so everyone knows, I’ve got 5 dang credits on Audible, and I spent one of them on the first GoT book.  I’ve read them in print already, but I’ll be listening to them.  they are each between 30 and 50 hours long, so by the time I get through them book 6 might be out.

Amusing snarky line, but let’s be fair. The issue is purely terminological. Rob doesn’t really want or like fantasy. What he likes is a story placed in a significantly alternative historical setting from ours, but with our universe’s natural laws. I don’t exactly share his dislike for giant monsters and magic, but surely he’s just as entitled to his preferences as the rest of us are to ours.

One disagreement on girls and boys movies. Girls can get boys to go to movies, but not explicitly chick flicks. That’s why 80% of the audience of “The Fault In Our Stars” was girls. No dates taking them. Same 17 years ago with “Titanic” and in the 1980’s with “Flashdance” and “Dirty Dancing.” Girls do like these comic book movies and action movies. I knew lots of girls in the day who loved “Die Hard” and my niece has dragged me and her husband to both “Expendables” movies, which she loves.

I’m surprised Rob is unaware that there are tearjerker movies released pretty often, as John said from Nicholas Sparks among others, and they all make money on modest budgets. This week it finished number one ahead of a much more expensive Tom Cruise movie, but the Cruise movie will gross more in the long run world wide. In between those is “Malificent” which is very much a chick flick and a big budget action fantasy picture that Angelina Jolie helped to open big a few weeks ago. No mention from John…

I took it that he has trouble feeling suspense or fear about something he knows is not in the real world.

During the promotion for Audible Books, John recommended Beverly Cleary’s “stunning” autobiography titled “My Own Two Feet.”  One problem: It’s not offered by Audible.

I was stuck by Rob claiming that, “No one ever declined to go to a movie because it was too sad.” Does he believe that? I wonder if it’s because he’s around too many Hollywood types? Because that’s not my experience at all. Personally, I don’t go to chick flicks or emotional melodramas; the only person in my family who was interested in “Fault” was the 12-year-old girl. But the whole family went to go see “Edge” and thought it was great.

You’re correct. John owes us one. I’ll get a new title from him and post it here.
