Ricochet is the best place on the internet to discuss the issues of the day, either through commenting on posts or writing your own for our active and dynamic community in a fully moderated environment. In addition, the Ricochet Audio Network offers over 50 original podcasts with new episodes released every day.
This week’s show is the very model of civil conversation and discourse as our hosts debate the President’s speech, and a whole host of his policies and positions. Who defends him and who throws him under the bus? This discussion may surprise you. Later, Hoover fellow Bruce Thorton joins to discuss the ever-evolving story in the Middle East and the continuing echoes of 9/11. Then, yep, El Rush Bro himself — David Limbaugh — stops by to chat about his new book Jesus On Trial (buy here now) which leads to yet another spirited discussion on faith and the deeper meaning of the Bible.
Music from this week’s episode:
How I Got Over by Aretha Franklin
The opening sequence for the Ricochet Podcast was composed and produced by James Lileks.
Thanks for not yelling at us, EJHill.

The issue with placing the blame for the state of the world at the feet of Barack Obama is that the President doesn’t bear sole responsibility for having put himself in that office in the first place.
By that I mean, sure, he RAN for President and MAYBE he had some outside idea that he might perform well and end up in either the Cabinet or Vice Presidency given his boredom with being a lowly Senator – but he captured lightning in a bottle by harnessing a unique combination of Racial Animosity (of minorities toward whites,) guilt (of whites regarding past treatment of minorities) and fatigue with George W. Bush and a seemingly wasted Presidency.
Ultimately, I think we get the leadership we deserve: The fault for the state of the world lies mostly with the people who put this blank canvas (onto which they projected their hopes and desires) into the Oval Office.
The world is now a reflection of US, and our apparent weakness and vacillation, and the image isn’t pretty.
and it stops after several minutes.
Direct link has been added to the post. It’s also here.
For the time being, I would suggest using the direct link, download the file to your desktop and play it locally using Quicktime or another audio player.
thanks.
Why is this not on Stitcher? Also, what gives? I feel like the quantity of podcasts is markedly decreased. This is my primary interaction with the site and the reason for sending my cup of coffee a month. I think only 2 podcasts since the beginning of September. This is sort of weak,
We’ll look into Stitcher. We haven’t changed anything with our feed, so it may be something on their end.
Update: We see the this episode on Stitcher. If you are not seeing it, let us know.
In terms of frequency, we took last week off. We’ll have a new Law Talk later today, a new Need To Know tomorrow, and a new GLoP on Monday. Also, check out our newest show Tracked and Targeted.
The question that Rob asked about why Muslims and Christians differ in their response to a growing depth in their belief. The difference is simple. Look at the origins. Jesus was a man of peace. Mohamed was warrior. Jesus taught love. Mohamed taught submission. As David says, there is nothing in the Gospel that can be used to justify violence. There are numerous suras in the Qu’ran which preach violence and slaughter. Both religions have been used to justify terrible violence at one time or another. The difference is that one can actually find the motivation and justification in their book. The other cannot. Obama would have us believe that Islam is a religion of peace. That is completely contrary to reality. There have been times and places, like Cordoba, where scholars studied and there was some limited toleration of other religions, although they were subject to dimmitude. Those times were definitely not the rule. The violent relationship between Sunni and Shi’ia is far closer to the rule than the exception.
I have been listening to commentary and reading others all day trying to understand what it was I was feeling about Obama’s speech last night. James’ final comments encapsulated my feelings perfectly. That is why I listen to you guys.
It really frustrates me that your podcasts repeatedly cut out after 10 to 15 minutes. I know you say go thru iTunes or some other hogwash, but 90% of my motivation for joining Ricochet is the podcasts and it doesn’t seem to be asking too much that you format them so subscribers can hear them.
Bruce Thorton was a fantastic guest!
Exactly!
It’s not a formatting issue.
What do you mean hogwash? Quit complaining.
It is odd that when I listen to the podcast on NRO it doesn’t cut out, but here it does.
Blue Yeti,
Is there any way podcasts could be staggered a little more? We go from none in over a week to 4 in 3 days.
Rob,
I live in Ohio, and one federal judge has decided that a celebration of sodomy is on par with traditional marriage. Sorry, it’s not. One man overturned the results of a statewide referendum addressing conduct, not race, national origin, creed, or gender.

The issue of whether Obama is to blame isn’t a static yes or no. The power of the presidency is that he’s in the unique position of influencing … and at times, rallying … the attitude of the country to face the threats we need to face. The president’s relationship to the country is dynamic.
However, Obama has almost entirely abandoned that dynamic relationship with the whole country. He focuses on his political base. His speeches are all fundraising speeches, purely political and entirely partisan.
When you address the country about using military force, that’s a time for a statesman speech. Instead, what we got was a political speech. It was a speech designed to protect himself with excuses for past failure, instead of a rationale for what he wanted to do next.
Sitting in that office makes you president, but it can’t make you presidential.
Super Nurse – “I think only 2 podcasts since the beginning of September. This is sort of weak,”
Personally, I accept that from time to time we might have to skip a week or so. Though, I miss it, it doesn’t bother me. I used to wonder why podcasts recorded on Wednesday didn’t show up for a few days but that seems to have been corrected.
Seriously…keep it up. I understand that you guys aren’t doing this out of the goodness of your hearts. Raise the rates if you need to. You are worth it…a rare combination of personalities!
Finally…the phone in testimonies are funny. Much better than Rob begging for money like one of his kids needs an operation or something. I still don’t see how this will help. The podcast is the best part of Ricochet (to me). I guess that is what I am paying for. I would pay more.
BTW – I ordered a Harry’s razor last night. We shall see
By the way, it’s heartening to hear that the Ricochet Founders can express strong disagreements with each other, neither one backing down, without breaching civility. That happens all the time on Ricochet among the members, even if there are other occasions when the civility might break down a bit.
Frankly, that audio snippet might be a useful selling pitch, presented in the right way.
That’s Vol. 5 Number XXXIII.
I’m confused by the reaction to Peter’s point about confusion. It seems so obviously true as to be irrefutable.
The leader of this country, when given a choice between A and B, chooses golf. He doesn’t seem to care whether we win or lose a war, he just wants that war to end. Presented with a complicated issue he seems to want to wish it away. He wants be president without all the presidenting.
Without leadership we have chaos.
What does he stand for? What does America stand for? Where are we going? What are we doing?
He’s the guy who should have answers to those questions. He doesn’t. So we all go off in our own directions pursuing that which matters to us. This is how fringe issues become national issues.
After listening to the first several minutes and then looking at the screencap, you needed to have Jim serving as a referee between the two UFC contestants, Peter and Rob.

“By that I mean, sure, he RAN for President and MAYBE he had some outside idea that he might perform well and end up in either the Cabinet or Vice Presidency given his boredom with being a lowly Senator”
I think you nailed it. I’ve been of the opinion for years that Obama never expected to win. He thought that he would be building a base for running 4 to 8 years down the line and was caught by surprise when he actually succeeded…
The first half-dozen times I heard James’ pitch for Harry’s shaves I was drawn to the Web site. I looked at those cool handles and worked out my custom delivery plan. (Never mind that the “obtuse”, “acute”, and “gothic” blade pitch stuff is utter bunkum.) Then I looked in the mirror, which showed that I don’t have a heavy beard and I don’t shave the heaviest part; at the replacement Trac II twin-blade cartridges that CVS sells for $.50 apiece; at the Bump-Fighter handle that recently replaced my 30-year-old Trac II handle; and at the $1.29 can of Burma Shave that almost never needs to be replaced.
Sorry, Harry’s. Not for me.
The Brits’ St. Au – GUS – tin is likely to refer to the ‘Apostle to the English’ sent in the late 500s by Pope Gregory as a missionary to the English. He was ultimately a bishop and archbishop of Canterbury (the first). He was not St. Augustine of Hippo.
Thanks for Aretha at the end. God is good.
