Your Movie Recommendations Please: Westerns

My fellow Ricocheteers:
I would like your recommendations for good Westerns. It's never been a genre that I've been interested in, and so my education regarding Westerns is sorely lacking. As we settle in for the Winter I imagine that an inordinate amount of time will be spent in front of the television.
I recently watched The Searchers, and enjoyed it far more than I expected. But before I go wasting my time on sub-par Westerns . . . I thought I would ask the assembled Ricotarians for their suggestions.

I loved the new version of True Grit; my husband prefers the old one. Good story, either way.
Total guilty pleasure for me was Cowboys and Aliens - it may not be to everyone's taste.

Ah, thanks for reminding me. I saw Tombstone when it originally came out. I HATED IT.
Granted, it had Val Kilmer in it, and that probably had something to do with my loathing. I should probably watch it again just to see if I still loathe it as much.

Just two words: John Ford. Nobody did the genre better, one of the golden age's great directors.

High Noon, John Ford's Cavalry Trilogy (Ft. Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and Rio Grande), McLintock!, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Ox-Bow Incident, Stagecoach, Red River (OK, I'm a big John Wayne fan) and for fun, City Slickers, because I'm absolutely in love with Helen Slater

An underrated but very good western is Will Penny starring an older Charleton Heston in one of his best acting performances ever. It is the most authentic western I've ever seen and has a realistic ending. If you prefer authentic over stylized westerns this little gem is for you.

Okay! Movies is my life! So here's some of my favorite Westerns:
True Grit (original) -- One of my favorites, not just for story and character, but also having one of the best movie scenes of all time.
Silverado -- 80's film with Danny Glover and Kevin Costner.
Once Upon a Time in the West -- Starring Henry Fonda and Charles Bronson. Infamous in casting Fonda as the villain. Scenes were cut out from the first telecast as it was felt people wouldn't be able to deal with Fonda being so evil.
High Noon -- Classic, all the action takes place in the last fifteen minutes of the film. The rest is the slow build up to that, the increasing tensions, and growing frustration as Gary Cooper is refused by all the townsfolk who once praised him.
The Quick and the Dead -- Probably the most shallow on my list, still a good film directed by Sam Raimi and a great cast.

I like the new True Grit so much I got the book on Audible.
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is one you have to pay close attention too, but awesome.
I would add The Outlaw Josey Wales, A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and Pale Rider. (High Plains Drifter is a bit much at times.)
Some of the Tom Selleck movies (Quigley Down Under and Monte Walsh) are pretty good as well.

No one's mentioned Unforgiven? I loved it... as well as most of these movies mentioned above. Outlaw Josie Wales especially. Is Lonesome Dove the book better, or the movie? (I vote for the book...but am willing to be persuaded.)

A couple of recent movies I like were Open Range and Broken Trail. Robert Duvall stars in both of them.
