A Slate reporter has been checking out the swag for sale at the Democratic National Convention. He came upon a calendar that features a different Obama theme each month. August's is deeply disconcerting. Check it out:

Trying to put the best construction on it, I wonder if it was an attempt to say something like Rush’s "talent on loan from God." I’m not nuts about Rush’s flippant way of saying it, but he is theologically correct, and it’s funny, startling, and true of all of us. The President is, in fact, "heaven sent" (Romans 13). Cutting it all the slack you can, though, this calendar page is so characteristic of Obama-- off kilter, theologically bad, jaw-droppingly tin eared– it’s another stunner. If there were one cow pie in a forty acre field, he’d step in it.

I can't keep up. I just find out that the perfectly good pirate word "swag" has acquired the meaning Secretly We Are Gay, because Secretly We Are Gray. Now it means Secretly We Are God. Damnit people slow down.
I'm voting tongue-in-cheek (and goodness knows what people mean by that anymore) with overtones of late Pre-Po-Mo-20th-Cent-Ironic. Not so much disturbing as confusing.

In 2008, I was at first cautiously hopeful about BHO. At one point he said in a wondering tone that he seemed to be a kind of blank slate upon which people projected their hopes and beliefs. That seemed an unusually candid remark for a politician.
I soon enough concluded that he was not a blank slate; that the appearance was a deliberate effect, achieved in part by a thorough program of hiding, manipulating , and lying about his past; and that being a blank slate is (I believe) a classic narcissist ploy.
