Well, with the Winter Meetings going on, it seems a good time to get some more baseball discussion going to help those of us going through baseball withdrawal.

So, here's the question du jour: You have just been appointed Commissioner of Baseball. What change or changes do you make to improve the game?

Institute the DH on the senior circuit & eliminate inter-league play.

Oh. And eliminate the All-Star game. Best record gets home field in World Series.

Mollie Hemingway, Ed.

I've thought about this a long time. I would ban slow drivers from the left hand lanes. Also, no silly food at ball parks. No margaritas, for instance.

What about food that's associated with the city? Would you allow, say, Philly Cheesesteaks in Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park?

Eliminate the DH from the American League. Can anyone explain why the pitcher shouldn't bat?

All Star should be for played for pride, not for World Series implications.

Never institute a salary cap.

Oh, and make batters stay in the batter's box. You are up there to hit, not wander around thinking about the fiscal cliff!

Pitchers shouldn't hit because they are boring to watch.....:-)  Also I like the DH's effect in prolonging the career of veterans, particularly when used in a platoon format.

BTW I agree that they should have to stay in the batters box to speed up the game.

It's not even the variety that gets me so much (I think that's good) as the complete departure from the peanuts, cracker jack, hot dog model.

What used to bond people around a game is now an individualized fan "experience." It's just a bit silly.

But perhaps the most fun thing to watch in baseball is the strategy -- something that no-hitting pitchers take away from.

Heh. My two expectations for this thread have now been achieved.

  1. I expected we'd get into the DH vs no-DH discussion again.
  2. I expected Miss Mollie to show up and be active in the thread.

I'd call that a good day's work. :)

I went to SafeCo in the third game of the Yankees/Mariners series this year just after the Yankees snapped up Ichiro.....I thought it was funny how much of their stadium was built around him. They would even have to change one of their main food staples the "Ichiroll".

Personally, last time I was at Safeco, I had a hot dog. :)

Tell me you had the garlic fries?  I think with the Mariners recent record the garlic fries may be the only legitimate argument for SafeCo's continued existence.

Nope. I am a traditionalist, though I stop short of Mollie's idea of outright banning other foods.

And it was worth it, because I and a friend showed the late Danawheels the basics of baseball. :)

  1. The DH rule delenda est.
  2. TV announcers will be required by league regulations to state the score, the innning, the number of outs and number of men on base, the name of the batter, and the count on the batter at least once every 3 minutes.  This is not to inform the viewer: it's to prove that those knuckleheads are aware that there's a game in progress.  No more stories about where you had dinner last night, who you saw, how the veal scallopini tasted, or any of the other dreck you babble on about.  Call the game, already.

Are #9 hitters really that exciting? #8 hitters don't keep from going to get a dog and beer. Also, one of the most exciting parts of the last playoffs for me was when Barry Zito put down that surprise bunt single in Game 5 of the NLCS. I do like watching guys like Edgar Martinez, Big Papi, and Thome prolong their careers though.

Eliminate the Designated Hitter Rule, and ban all its adherents from every precinct of baseball. This is not football--we do not jigger the rulebook to improve TV ratings. (Think of me as a baseball Social Con.)
