The big game today: Argentina versus Greece. Going into this match, Argentina leads Greece by six points. But if Greece defeats Argentina today, Greece can tie Argentina's overall score, remaining a contender for the world cup itself.

Scheduled to play for Argentina: the astonishing Lionel Messi (who all by himself--I'll admit it--has turned even me into a soccer fan). Just look at what Messi can do:

Ricochet followers will be glad to know that while Peter was posting this, I was in the parking lot letting the air out of his tires. Next thing we know, he'll be wearing a beret and saying things like, "Insanity is a designation of the powerful meant to marginalize the disenfranchised, n'est ce pas?" Then it'll be too late. He must be stopped now. Everyone who believes that Peter can be saved, clap your hands...

"Vuvuzela!" is all I got. I despair of Peter's salvation. As he clear-headedly noted, the game tears families apart by targeting the kids. Next thing we know, he'll become a cat person. Where is Jonah to deliver the short, sharp corrective?

Since we're all taking sides, let the record show that David Freddoso, too, is a soccer fan:

Everything must always be improvised. There are no committee meetings or “huddles,” no breaks between every play or every pitch, and each goal is a thing of beauty with huge significance for the game. Think of the game as a metaphor for the free market at work, with its constant ebb and flow, its rare opportunities and its creative destruction.

Au contraire, James, success in the free market is highly dependent on proper strategy and planning. Most corporations have a board of directors, those that don't, including small businesses, have business plans.

Most functional units within a company have strategic plans and something like "huddles" on a regular basis to keep everyone up to speed on status and direction.
