It turns out that Clint foreshadowed the essence of this Presidential election. The empty chair was more interesting than Obama in a conversation. Suppose Clint spoke to Biden that night as well. Would this be the right picture?

Biden's chair

Now, two questions:

(1)  Biden is a very experienced debater. Has he gaffed in a debate before?

(2) What would be the most deadly punch Biden can deliver?

This ties in nicely with the comment someone made that if Biden doesn't drool they'll call the debate a tie.

Thanks. Since Biden is an experienced debater,  I think it would be very hard on either Biden or Ryan to do better than Mitt Romney, but I am probably wrong.

Biden is going to try and do a Lloyd Bentsen on Ryan. Biden is going talk about "better days," back when Biden and Senator fill-in-the-blank were at the center of power in the Senate and Ryan was still doing a paper route.

Wouldn't this strategy be counter productive? I thought most people are tired  of the past, and rather look forward to a better time?

Actually, look up the video of Ryan schooling (scolding?) Obama on healthcare at one of the big head meetings. I think Ryan is going to make the beating Obama took from Romney look like a pillow fight.

Biden is an experienced debater in the same way that Iraq's Republican Guard, much-vaunted in the run-up to the war, was an experienced fighting force.  Just as the Guard had never been tested by the likes of the U.S. military, Biden has never been tested by the likes of Paul Ryan.

My prediction:  It will be another devastating night for Obama/Biden, which will bring about yet more bad press and poll numbers, resulting in more character assassination from the Hopeychangers, along with an aggressive, nastier version of Obama for the final two debates.

Biden was in the Senate for 36 years. He's got lots of material to work with. He's not too bright, but he's been in the business for a long time and he knows what works with the seniors.

Is there any issue that can possibly be couched as a deadly punch? Like the 47% remark?

Remember that Sarah Palin beat Biden in the 2008 debate (or as the media put it, the debate was a draw). I love Sarah Palin, but I think Ryan will do better than her.
And yes, Biden has gaffed in a debate. in 2008, he made the outrageous and completely fictitious claim that "we and the French kicked Hezbollah out of Lebanon." Of course, no one in the media called him on it. The chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations committee has no idea what he's talking about on the middle east? I just don't see a story angle to that.

I suspect Biden will mostly try to cultivate fear among the elderly. He will be painting the "grandma off the cliff" picture with almost everything he says. There certainly isn't a record to run on, so demonization is all Obama/Biden have to make their case.

It's not a matter of gaffs - it's Judgement Day.  The Obama administration has been one long string of fusterclucks - all Ryan has to do is politely remind the American people.

Ryan will leave the podium and stride over while ripping off his shirt.   He will then apply the five point exploding heart technique on nutty Joe and that will be that.

So I can conclude that he didn't fail enough in 2008 for the MSM to turn against him like they have with Obama last week? In order for Ryan to keep the Mittmentum ( term coined by ConservativeWanderer); he would have to beat Biden so hard on the head that Biden's talking points become verbal diarrhea. I assume MSM is desperate to make Biden a winner now.

I have to agree with Mel.

Look, Biden is a clown if you take the wide view, but in the narrow view, Biden can be dangerous.

He was in the Senate for decades.  The US Senate gets the cream of politicians.  Maybe you can get elected, maybe you can get re-elected and not be a first tier politician.  But you can't stay for 36 years without some substantial skills.

Biden has been doing the politician thing for half a century.  He can focus when he needs to and he can say things as VP in a debate that a President cannot say.  He also has an ear for political one liners that can resonate with voters.

Under rate him at your peril.
