Will Women Ever Accept Mantyhose?
No sooner did I finish changing my mind about pantyhose for men -- this is a thing, FYI -- I wondered if my 5 cheers for mantyhose might have missed a key problem.
Even if they leave guys' manliness intact (or boost it, if they then heft a broadsword), will women shun the things? Will girlfriends and wives embrace the brosiery, or will they unite in their prejudice against them?
I need answers, and not just from our resident pop-culture vulture Emily.

Bring back slops!
Re: Will Women Ever Accept Mantyhose?
Ugh.
Around here, we call them “long johns.” Good for a cold day. As a fashion item? Sure. Add them to skorts and man-purses and all the other bits of inanity cooked up by style writers who find men’s insistence on basic things like “pants” and “suits” to be injurious to the narrative. Men are just dying to accessorize, don’t you know? They just need permission.
The words “Mantyhose” and “brosiery” - like that other wretched word, “bromance” - are gorge-lifting terms that should only be spoken in a tone of such dripping contempt they make George Sanders sound like Wally Cox. Most of the style writers, I’d guess, feel a deep and mysterious unease with the terms, but to say so publicly would only reinforce socially-constructed notions of gender, and suggest that gay sensibilities are anomalous and non-congruent to the general male experience. It's one thing to say - incorrectly - that “men can’t wear a pink shirt.” (I do.) It’s another to say “men should try spike heels.”
Stop it now before they start calling jock-straps “mono-bras.”

Re: Will Women Ever Accept Mantyhose?
I've died and returned to another world I think. I am currently in my office seeing patients wearing a nice button down shirt, Wrangler jeans and black Ariat cowboy boots.
Re: Will Women Ever Accept Mantyhose?
I miss the days of two genders. Seems so long ago.
Re: Will Women Ever Accept Mantyhose?
I'm with J. Lileks – I don't like the term either. It's emasculating. But if the particular undergarment serves some purpose — extra warmth on a cold day; allowing a man who's put on a few extra pounds to squeeze into his trousers; or whatever— then sure, I accept it.
I imagine that Rahm Emanuel owns a few pairs from his days in the ballet. I wonder if he's found other uses for them.

I've heard of Marines at Camp Le Jeune using them to keep leaches out of certain areas.

Re: Will Women Ever Accept Mantyhose?
Wrong name: Mantyhose should be Pansyhose. If you wore those in the town I grew up in, you'd be on your way out of town real quick.

Hey, if you find a practical use for them, OK. But as a fashion statement, ixnay.

Re: Will Women Ever Accept Mantyhose?
I'm hardly one to comment, as I do occasionally appear in public in a kilt and at other times in athletic tights (while engaged in the appropriate athletic activity), but I find the cute names the most disturbing thing about this product. It's a clue that these come from a particular mindset about masculine dress that I would not want to associate with myself (to put it carefully).
Women seem to approve of both my kilt and my athletic garb, but there are strong masculine lineages for both. There was time when men wore such stockings as a part of regular dress, and could be complimented for having "a good leg". Perhaps those days will return, but not with under that name of "mantyhose".

Someday, people will watch Kramer arguing for the "bro" and Mr. Costanza pushing for the "manssiere", and wonder what the joke is.

NFL linemen wear panty hose on cold days to stay warm. I would not try to run one of them out of town without a big gun.

In Scotland, if a man wears a kilt for any non-ceremonial purpose, people would laugh at him. Most kilts are worn in North America.

Whatever you do, do NOT click on the "enhancing underwear" link at the International Jock web site.
What has been seen cannot be unseen.

Re: Will Women Ever Accept Mantyhose?
I agree with Beau James. Forget all of that and get to the real issue- no one knows how to design men's underwear. No one. I swear that I am going to start my own company, and I know just how to design, and then advertise. Too bad private investment capital is scarce under Obamanomics.
No briefs that crawl up the back, no baggy boxers that er, leave you unsupported in the breezes.
This is a national disgrace.
