Not long ago, David Brooks was churning out column after column trying to tell Obama how to accomplish successfully what he wanted to do. Now things have changed. The new theme? How Obama could have been a success. Today's alternate history:

Americans didn’t like all of it. But this wasn’t conventional big government liberalism. The Democrats seemed to be a serious party attending to serious things. When November 2010 rolled around, the unemployment rate was still high, but Democratic leaders had prepared voters for that. In the meantime, America was rebuilding its core, strengthening itself for better days ahead.

Dem silverback Pat Caddell can't be alone in having grown supremely frustrated by what's happened to his party under Obama's leadership. I'll leave the latest Hillary-in-'12 updates to Rob. Meanwhile, the question, which implicates Hillary but is much bigger than Hillary, remains: will the Clintonian Dems mount an insurrection? When? And how?

Nov 2010? - he is not re-writing history, he is pre-writing it! When he talks about "America rebuilding its core," does he mean the tea-parties?

It is possible that the Democratic Party will return to more traditional values. But that wouldn't mean we're through with American socialism (yes, American socialism, not just socialism in America), utter disregard for Constitutional boundaries and demonization (as opposed to engagement) of political opponents. Obama is exceptional in many ways, but is not a complete fluke. This struggle over the core principles of American government is here for at least a generation.

What Clinton understood is, traditional Democrats (like the kind you find in flyover country) are first of all, traditional. They're the Democrats who buy US flags to display, and not UN flags. Obama doesn't quite understand the difference, and it shows.

Will Clintonian Dems Return?

What's more important to me at the moment is that Mark Steyn has returned.

The Clintons are Obama Lite. We'll not be out of the woods as long as they have credibility or real influence.

No mentions of Reinhold Niebuhr discussion bull sessions thrilling commentators such as Mr. Brooks with Reinhold's fine views on fostering economic growth. He also forgot to mention that Rahm Emanuel's comment about the UAW would have been more helpful to the cause than any of the energy nonsense.

Who among us has not had a conversation that started something like this

"Man, I never thought I'd say this, but I wouldn't be sniffing nearly this much glue if Hillary had won the election..."

I just read the Brooks piece. He becomes more irrelevant by the day.

Honestly, a fantasy thumb-sucker in which he imagines Obama behaving like a wise, temperate leader? Noble and standing above the fray? Rejecting political opportunism?

The tone of the piece implicitly suggests that Brooks actually believes that Obama has it in him to behave differently than he consistently, obdurately does.

What a sad, sad passage for a man who owes his entire career to the sainted William F. Buckley.

Well look at Chris Buckley, who owes even more to WFB, and is even worse than Brooks. Gleep.
