Why There's Hope

Earlier today I posted a thread on Michael Lewis's article on the mess in Greece. Now Ricochet member G.A.Dean has posted a comment so apt and encouraging--and such a lovely fit with all that Paul Rahe has been saying this week--that I couldn't resist: I'm yanking it out of the conversational thread to post it right here:
The Greeks riot to avoid responsibility, and in the US the Tea Parties march to demand that they be given back responsibility.

Re: Why There's Hope
They say the world has become too complex for simple answers. They are wrong. There are no easy answers, but there are simple answers. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right. Winston Churchill said that "the destiny of man is not measured by material computation. When great forces are on the move in the world, we learn we are spirits -- not animals." And he said, "There is something going on in time and space, and beyond time and space, which, whether we like it or not, spells duty" -- Ronald Reagan

Re: Why There's Hope
I'm not so sanguine as D. A. Dean.
Wait until the unemployment benefits really run out and the inevitable cuts in social welfare programs and entitlements start materializing.
There really are, you know, two Americas.

Re: Why There's Hope
I guess that's what Obama meant when he said that America and Greece were both exceptional.

Re: Why There's Hope
It is my observation that an entitlement granted in good times is seldom appreciated while the same entitlement withdrawn or diluted in tougher times is a full frontal assault on the beneficiaries of that entitlement, who invariably are portrayed by the leftish media (ie most of it) as victims brutally sacrificed to keep the super-rich (who allegedly-and in fairness, in a very few instances, actually- pay little or no tax) in clover while the poor/middle class subsidize their excesses. At least that's how it plays out where I come from (struggling EU State).
Re: Why There's Hope
Being the actual target of a a riot in Greece that prevented a Vandals show, I can attest to the blind rage in their lefties (we entertained the troops in Iraq a few weeks earlier). And what's with the packs of wild dogs in Athens? Who can't control their dog population? It's a great city though......for them to poop on!

I miss Triumph. Where is he?
Probably doing summer stock. Or playing the lounge at the Sioux City Holiday Inn.
What a cruel, fickle culture.
Re: Why There's Hope
Yes, there's hope, but will there be change?

Re: Why There's Hope
Thanks for the mention, Peter.
I recognize that, as Kenneth said, that there will be some anger and anguish when things come to a head, but I also think that there is still a large segment of America that is strong enough to face the realities of the problem. It would certainly help if our leaders and political parties would shift from being fear-mongers to helping to prepare and inspire the people. A lot less "us vs them" and more "we"...Obama grabbed for it in his campaign rhetoric, and then acted completely differently in office. The Republicans need to say it and then do it.

Re: Why There's Hope
The sad question is: will the politicians allow us to get that responsibility back?
(Sad, because we never should have had to ask that question in America, of all places.)

Re: Why There's Hope
The Tea Party movement does give me hope, but I'm not convinced enough Americans are willing to see programs and agencies gutted in practice as well as in theory. We'll see.
