Prompted by Paul Rahe's post below, I just spent a moment reviewing my most recent Uncommon Knowledge interview with

Thomas Sowell.  Legitmacy rates, family stability, even unemployment rates--all were better among African Americans decades ago, Tom argues, than they are today.

Of course this demolishes the whole "Liberal", "Progressive", world view, which is why they are up in arms about Mrs Bachmann's signing.

The candidate who can most annoy Liberals and Mike Murphy Shmurphy is gonna get my vote.

Yeah, I thought about that exact same passage from that interview when I saw SBR's post and chose to remain silent.  I decided that anybody on this site either was already aware of it, had digested it, and still had that reaction, or they hadn't ever bothered to watch/listen, so I just turned wrenches in the garage and let it pass.

The good news is that I am nearly 2/3rds of the way through marrying a mower deck from one lawn tractor to the frame of another tractor and the grass has only gotten a foot tall while I banged my knuckles.  You know, having a huge yard and a small budget can be a challenge.

What on earth do You mean "move the slider[?!!]"

Nobody Here would ever do that to Dr. Sowell, "National Treasure"

Thomas Sowell is a national treasure, not only because he's intelligent, there are lots of those folks, as he points out, but because he thinks; not all of the others do.

He delivers straight-forward pronouncements, secured by research (his and others), but that gets him into trouble with the unconstrained vision crowd.  Some would view his bluntness as a weakness - he is somewhat of a truth blurter - but he deals in facts, hard facts, and I can't imagine any greater strength in an intellectual.  It distinguishes him from those, as he might say, "deep thinkers."

As I say, a national treasure.

Thank you very much, Peter.

You have been both a boon to my political education and a much needed example of how a gracious and thoughtful man conducts himself in public discourse.

I genuinely appreciate you for that.

If I had the money I would buy you a real Camaro (not the fake V-6) just to show the extent of my gratitude.

You are a good man.

I have to say that participating in Ricochet has been a tremendous education for me. It means a lot to me to be a part of this.

I try to be open to persuasion, but I refuse to be indoctrinated.

I realize now that I must come across to many here as obsequious toward liberals (I only chose this moniker to poke fun at the ardent Palinistas I was tussling with once upon a time).

I really don't see myself that way, but I think it is time for me to take a hard look at why that is.

A very wise man once told me "If three people call you a jackass, buy a saddle".

At 26:18, Dr. Sowell wholeheartedly endorses this statement by Henry Rosovsky:

Never underestimate the difficulty of changing false beliefs by facts.

I think that is the more relevant point to take from Dr. Sowell for this particular Bachmann controversy.  The offending paragraph in the pledge she signed may be true, but what does it matter if nobody accepts it?

At the risk of being thought, in Hugh Hewitt show parlance, a brown-noser, Peter is perhaps the best interlocutor I've heard.

I'm of the opinion, not necessarily a correct opinion, that institutions such as slavery came about because of economic conditions. Yes, war and conquest played a part in the advance of slavery, but these were only fillips.

I base my view on the thought that in man'e early history most of life revolved around finding and getting the necessities of life. Excess wealth, which is required to hire someone, is in man's history a relatively recent development. As a consequence a man in need of what today we might call a job in centuries past would settle for food as opposed to wages simply to keep body and soul together. It's this subsistence-living that provided the stimulus that eventually grew into the custom, even the social norm, of slavery.

In our later history free men, and as Dr. Sowell puts it, democratic principles, changed all that. Now I would hate to think I was on the wrong side of Dr. Sowell, but I think more important than principle and democracy was strong economic performance, which demanded the best labour could produce which perforce removed the need for slavery.

Agreed.  When I hear about what a great interviewer Barbara Walters is or Tim Russert was, I just shake my head in disgust.

If Peter had sold out his principles and gone to the dark side, tormenting conservatives, he'd be a mega-star by now.

But then, he wouldn't be Peter Robinson.

I was re-watching the interview with Dr. Sowell and my wife stepped in to watch a bit.

After 5 minutes she said, "Where did they find a journalist with integrity to do these interviews?"

"California, I think," I said.
