I tried. I tried to think up some contrarian reason why, actually, Democrats should be thrilled with their new branding. Well, okay, pleased. Satisfied? Untroubled. At least. At a bare minimum, untroubled.

But I couldn't. Maybe you can. Ready? Go:

Since Democrats like identity politics, I guess it makes since they have a brand to wear. Where should it be placed, upper cheek or lower cheek?

It looks like something they stole from the smokestack of a decrepit, Liberian-flagged oil tanker. But I grew up around ports.

I am sorry I don't have anything encouraging to say to the Dems about their new logo, but I do like the fact that they seem to realize that they are at the center of the bullseye this November 2.

I am glad someone had this reaction as well; it was my immediate thought: a target. But of course, we want to stay away from any reference to things even metaphorically ballistic lest they be misconstrued by nogoodniks. Is it that Democrats want to provoke this percepton so that they can immediately claim yet another raison d’ victimhood? The blandness of the logo is reminiscent of socialist architecture. It is devoid of intellect and soul. It is the desperately defiant reduction to minimalist communication: information without wisdom; information denying wisdom.

In high school, I saw that symbol a few times on the top of German class pop quizzes, and it didn't stand for "Deutschland."

It sort of looks like the copyright symbol. That makes sense, since the copyright is a government sanctioned monopoly, and the democrats have a knack for excluding those they don't like and making money off those they do.

If you tilt your head to the left (how else?) it looks like a face sticking its tongue out at you. No comment needed there. It could also be their representation of a dime, with their "change that matters" slogan meaning the dime is the new dollar, and you should be saving up all your dimes for the "patriotism" increase to come. It's a bit of a stretch, but the last couple years have been surreal enough to make me take nothing for granted.

Yes a target...but the "D" stands for "Don't"

Maybe Stan Lee agreed to use it as the design for the new, "less jingoistic" Captain America's shield.

By letting them brazenly steal their logo, maybe this is simply Target's (the store) way of getting out of the Lib doghouse.

After that flap during the summer, I guess they realized that the middle class homosexual was a more important demographic for them than they anticipated.

I just want to know how many meetings, and brainstorming sessions, and PowerPoint presentations -- how many man-hours -- went into this meaningless, forgettable little graphic?

I can see it: the expensive "branding" experts in their complicated jeans and interesting t-shirts and fashion-forward eyewear, taking the DNC "Communications Team" through idiotic visual exercises -- and charging by the hour, I'm pretty sure -- and then the focus groups and the "internal discussions" and the "tweaks on the concept" and phase upon expensive phase of reviews and presentations and then, finally, they unveil it.

Clip art, basically.

All of that noise and money, and this is what the Democrats come up with?

Fitting, really, when you think about it.

This is a subtle and far-reaching plot. We all know that Dems, when thwarted, like to blame poor messaging. So when they get their butts lightly braised and served up with a malmsey currant reduction this November, they have a built-in excuse.

"Look at this logo. Just look at it. Clearly the graphic designers are to blame."

Ursula Hennessey

I immediately think "OD" and that makes me think "overdose." And, well, that about sums it up for me. So, I like the logo. It reminds me, quickly, why I want things to change this November.

More than anything, it represents a lack of self-awareness. Now is a moment to downplay "Democrat," to downplay associations with the party in power, to "keep that whole Democrat thing under your hat, partner," and attract independents.

Individual Dem candidates surely get this, even if the party bosses don't.

Am I the only one who is more disturbed by the words beneath the logo?

I realize "change" is a standard buzzword in elections. But might this suggest that the Democrats' liberal leadership is trying to enshrine its tyrannical goals and methods in the party's future?

I've been hoping the Democratic Party would have its own war for identity between the progressives and the proles.

Do you know what strikes me about it? It is decidedly a non-American look. The old donkey, like the GOP elephant, had a touch of the flag in in it. This could be a foreign party or it could be selling donuts.

To make my point, please see the evolution here.

So sad they wasted their money on this. I must make a note to shed a tear.

Actually, the first things that came to my mind were circle-U or circle-K, symbols that indicate food contained in a package so marked is kosher.

Well, the opposite of kosher is "trefe." I think circle-D should be considered the symbol for "politically trefe," which symbol indicates unequivocally that any candidate or policy so marked is absolutely NOT kosher.

I think it's a great logo. Zero Democrats would be change that matters.

I say we go for it.

The funniest part is that someone sold the Democrats on the idea that this was the change that mattered.

Don't worry about passing that budget. Don't worry about the expiring tax cuts. Don't worry about keeping your job through good performance. This new logo is the change that will make America love you again.

Not that many of the Democrats running in Colorado this year are excited to show their party affiliation. Most of the ads that aren't directly attacking their Republican opponents are merely a variation on the "No, seriously, I’m a small government conservative at heart" theme.

If your favorite sports team goes into the dumper, what's the first thing they do? Why, change the logo and the uniforms, of course! They're still losers but they lose with a fashion statement.

Which is why the NY Yankees haven't changed since...?
