My former colleague, Tony Fratto, is called an "idiot" by Chris Matthews at about the 5:30 mark of the video. Classic Chris Matthews performance.  And a window into how these guys think about the private sector.

Matthews is an ignoramus and a bully. He apparently thinks that shouting something over and over can make it true. Especially when shouting over the counter-argument.

It is pretty damned stupid to make it a habit of calling other people idiots.

Not because the other people aren't doing or saying something stupid.

No, it is because when you do or say something stupid, unless the people around you are much more gracious than you deserve, they will turn the word back on you all the more quickly.

After all, you did set the rules of (un)civility in the zone around you.

It always gets back to the same argument about government spending.  Liberals just cannot understand that government has no money except that which they derive from taxes, bonds, or printing it.  Government spending necessarily means that something was taken out of the private sector first before it was put back in, and usually much less after being administered.

Maybe I can simplify it for Matthews. When the mean old Democrat wolves are circling the barnyard, the laying hens won't go out to eat off the ground, and pretty soon they stop producing enough eggs. And your idea of subsidizing the wolves doesn't really help. It just increases the number of wolves circling the barnyard.

My first reaction:  "Matthews is an idiot." But you've convinced me that we're better than that. However, he is wrong and he is a bully.

Couldn't have said it better. Why is this so hard to understand?

Wow, I can't believe that Chris Matthews thinks that businesses are intentionally not recovering to punish Obama.  What a puerile understanding of how the world works.

Remember when we were in High School and they told us you should go with your first reaction when taking tests?

It fits here.

It is because they are racists or something.

Tony Fratto makes an intelligent counter-argument, and Chris Matthews yells out a total non sequitur.  "Have you been to Europe? Have you been to Asia lately?!!!!"

Pathetic.

Thought experiment:  compare anyone in MSNBC's line-up to the commentary of Charles Krauthammer on Fox.

MSNBC: deflection, non sequiturs, and ad hominem attacks.

Krauthammer:  rational, thoughtful commentary directed to the heart of the issue.

I will say this for Chris Matthews (and MSNBC):

Either he or his handlers ast MSNBC are smart enough to not invite Skinheads on the show - and risk another attack with folding chair a la Morton Downey Jr.

Did anybody set Matthews incredibly lame performance on Jeopardy?  Compare his with Chris Wallace's .  No comparison.  QED.

Chris is being a drama queen - try having a tantrum like that on Asian TV or European TV - think he would be allowed to behave like that on a government owned station? Not a chance.  Now extrapolate that for business in Asia - things are fine as long as you toe the line and keep the officials happy. Crowd sourcing the financial attitudes of all those American business owners illustrates that uncertainty makes investing too risky. It makes good TV though. Are his ratings up?

I saw Chris Matthews' performance on "Jeopardy." He should be very careful about tossing about the word "idiot" in any context at all.

Its their world view. As to where the money comes from? A. Don't want to think about that...B. The goose will continue to lay golden eggs, because its always done so. C. You hate the poor.

BTW  Chris Matthews calling someone/anyone that has an IQ 4 points higher than a flatworm an idiot...that's rich.

My thoughts exactly. But, then again, Chris Matthews-style liberalism has never been deep on thought.

Business are intentionally not recovering to punish Obama?

Nonsense. They'd love to recover, and all it will take is for Obama to get out of the way.

But let's indulge the fantasy, suppose that it's true, and that "business" (you know, that gigantic secret club we all belong to) really is adamant that we won't let things get better so long as Obama is in the White House. Then I guess we got them where their hearts and minds will follow, right?

Does Matthews think that he will ... shame us ... into giving Obama a second chance? What exactly is Matthews' strategy, other than to complain?

All they're doing is setting up a fall guy (racism) to take the blame when they lose, to forestall any chance they'd have to admit to the failure of their own policies and stupidity.

"The private sector is sitting on 2 trillion dollars right now," Matthews said, quickly interrupting. "It doesn't want to spend because it doesn't want this guy to look good. It doesn't want him re-elected."

We've seen this sort of "thinking" before.
